Distorted sound (intermittent) on playback

Newbie to ProTools Se,
Using a Vista laptop, which exceeds all the sys requirements.

Getting intermittent distortion on playback. Seems to kick in, then go away. Restarting is a cure, but a hassle.
I noticed a couple of previous posts re: the same thing, (somebody called it white noise) but the threads drifted off, with no resolve, or cure.
So I'm not the only one getting this glitch.
Crazy. My 1st tune is very short, and un-thick. (but, of course, brilliant) Only 4 tracks, about 16 bars so far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pro Tools SE does not support Windows Vista - only Windows XP and Windows 7 are supported.

Actually, I made a mistake.
My computer is Win 7.
Distortion situation has improved since my last post with:
installing ext. hard drive, and playing session files from there,
and....downloading latest Fast Track driver, for win7 64-bit.

Distortion still happens, just takes longer to kick in, maybe 5 minutes of music.
Solution is to restart pro-tool, what a hassle.
Weird.
Session files play fine thru Itunes.
Any thoughts anyone?

Good to hear that things have improved with the external drive and FastTrack drivers. In Preferences > Audio, are you using the "Mixing or Producing" setting? This can also be used for recording and may help with your remaining issues.

Back to my distortion problem.
You advised going to Prefs.....but in my SE version, I cannot access prefs.
Understandable....I guess. I know it's the lowest level starter ProTool version, but seems it should still work, on a basic level. ie, without distortion on a simple 4 track, un-complicated tune....right?

Is SE version upgradable to the next level, M-powered, I think.
How much does this cost.?

I like the software...it's doing a good job, just the distortion (I think others are referring to "white noise"...probably the same thing) is giving me grief.

Pro Tools SE Preferences can be found in the File menu. In the Audio section (first tab), check that "Mixing or Producing" is selected - this may help with the issue that you are experiencing. If it still occurs, let us know so that we can look into it further - please include full computer specifications.

Pro Tools M-Powered and Pro Tools 9 are purchased as separate applications - there is no discounted upgrade path.

you cant access prefrences if any of the record button are selected.

i was also having the problems with the static(white noise) on play back.

here are my system specifications.

windows Xp pro sp3
lenovo thinkpad T60
intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66 GHz
980 MHz, 2 GB of RAM

please help, i have been searching for aid for over two months now on different problems. its very frustrating to spend alot of my money and for it not to even work. if you cant help me how can i get my money back? thanks.
