The Grandmaster (OT)
Go see this movie while you can --- it is so beautiful, and emotionally engaging, and the cinematography is breathtaking.
Best movie I have seen this year. And possibly last year as well. 6 on a scale of 1 to 5. |

Re: The Grandmaster (OT)
Well, for starters, the director is Kar Wai Wong. His style is very different from that of the typical "Hong Kong Kung Fu movie" -- it is very slow paced, with lots of slow motion scenes, and lots of attention to detail. You'll be watching a closeup of raindrops splattering off the hat of the protagonist for a minute or so - with accompanying sound design. That is not for everyone, though I love it.
The action choreographer is Woo-Ping Yuen (he has worked on dozens of martial arts movie) On the cast, the main characters are Gong Er, daughter of the kung fu grandmaster of the North, played by gorgeous Ziyi Zhang; and Ip Man is played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai. Sound department was headed up by Robert McKenzie, music by Frenchman Nathaniel Mechaly and Japanese Shigeru Umebayashi. I liked the music, by the way, in addition to the underscore there was authentic Chinese opera, something by Puccini. Great stuff, a classic. I heard that the original Chinese version is at least an hour longer, and that it was cut back to two hours at the request of distributors Weinstein. Can't wait to see the original Chinese version on blu ray. |
