Default Any sign of plugin delay compensation in PT6?

Please tell me that plugin delays will become a thing of the past. It's a real pain.

I started a topic for this a month ago or so. After it went some pages Digi finally chimed in, saying basically that it is not comming in PT6, and that they don't have any idea when it will be implemented. Frustrating indeed...

Beech, there won't even be Direct-Connect support (at first.)

No more MLCD, no more SSC...

Remember what company you're asking about! They definitely don't care what you (and and the rest of us) would so desperately like to see.

There is a manual (non automatic) solution that would suffice and would be incredibly simple to implement. we discussed this in detail many years ago. The Digi techs had to have read those threads. The people making the decisions JUST DON'T CARE.

I'm just venting, since this post won't make any difference at all.

You know, not only will I not be upgrading to PT6 for the forseeable future, but I've decided to start investigating products from other manufacturers. I bought a CT24 a few months ago and I'm sorry I didn't put some more cash together and go for an analog console (might still do). I think its time for me to start taking the outputs of Pro Tools back to the console and mixing with outboard gear. By all accounts, it will sound better anyway.

PLUGIN DELAY COMPENSATION IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO TAKES DAW RECORDING SERIOUSLY!

Plugin compensation would be great as long as it doesn't screw up other things. My track counts are pretty high and I don't think I spend more than 15 minutes per mix doing plugin compensation.

I for one am happy that Digi takes their time to get things stable and working correctly rather than just releasing features to appease the masses.

Try using iCal or iSync from Apple if you want to try software written totally for marketing reasons. Then you will see what happens when software is released too soon,

"My track counts are pretty high and I don't think I spend more than 15 minutes per mix doing plugin compensation."

My track counts are quite often over 50 and my files can contain over an hour of audio from live recordings. This audio is often moved in time to suit the picture edl. So when I want to eq the snare for instance, I like to try a couple of different plugins. This means selecting the audio from beginning to end (being careful to include all regions!) and setting up nudge to be in samples mode. Then option+click the volume readout to get the plugin delay and then nudge, nudge, nudge. I usually have to make a note of the nudged amount in the comments box in case I don't want that particular plugin after all.
So after all that I finally get to eq the snare.
Maybe I don't like the first plugin so I'd like to try another. Oops, I have to undo all the previous nudging and go through the whole process again.

Guess what, sometimes I just loose the vibe of mixing because it just takes to long to do a simple job.

It is not in PT6.0 ... neither will it be in 6.1 or 6.2 .... it will probably be by version 7 ... not earlier IMHO

Version 7 is supposedly when support for Mix hardware will be dropped, isn't it? This is just pure speculation, but I wonder if dropping Mix hardware might be a prerequisite for adding delay compensation (i.e. maybe the older hardware won't support it).

At any rate, there was a fairly lengthy explanation from someone at Digidesign that explained the difficulties involved. It was certainly a LOT more involved than I thought it would be.

Does anyone have a link to that thread handy?

My prediction is that it will take another hardware revision, meaning the next step after HD, before we see a totally compensated Pro Tools.

By that time, host-based Nuendo 3.0 (maybe 4.0) will be looking mighty fine w/ Intel and AMD shooting through the roof by then.

Beech, there are two things I can think of that might help your situation.

1. Wherever possible use RTAS versions of the plugins since they don't have a delay (other than the fixed latency you've already assigned).

2. If you have the DSP available, move all your tracks earlier by a fixed amount (say 200 samples) and then put time adjusters on each track for 200 samples. Now whenever you add a plugin get the track back to the 200 sample delay using time adjuster -much quicker and less to keep track of than moving the audio.

Hope this helps,

Zep
