Is this possible?
to sync up my 002 and hd24 together to have 40 i/o for recording and play back at the same time

with 2 computers....probably. But keep in mind that the HD24 is not ptle compatible, so you have to record in a different application. After recording is done you could mix in protools provided you have no more then 32 channels to mix together (limit of ptle)

002 can only run 18 I/O at a time anyway.

Sure..You'll need to accommodate the combined outputs though..24+8= 32 for monitoring /mixing. 24 is the HD24's full analog output capacity with the DA card installed, and 8 is the max # of analog outs you can get from your 002. Also ..there is a need for an external hardware sync box, that can either slave to MTC or a printed LTC track from the 002, while able to output ADAT sync via the 9 pin port. There are a couple of choices out there..Google it. happy tooling,
