Default SSD Slave clock and external Sync Inputs

What are the Slave Clock Input connector and the External Sync conector for?

Can they be used with other equipment other than a VSD.

Do they carry Time Code?

I need to do two things

1: Lock ProTools to a Fostex 2424 Hard disk recorder that has a word clock out and MIDI out.

2: Lock ProTools to a DA 88 with a SY88 sync card.

I'd like to keep it tight than just run timecode into the SSD?

Thanks for your time and help!!!
