Default importing adat tracks

hi there.

i currently have a bunch of tracks that were recorded on a 16 bit blackface adat. Now, i need to get them into my friend's 24 bit pro tools studio (mac os). I'm somewhat new to adats and very new to pro tools. Has anyone else done this, and what are my options? I know that there are optical outputs, but i'm not sure how to connect those up. How much would the sound suffer if i just ran the tracks out into a board and then into his box?

i'm sure that these questions have been answered, but i can't find it in my search.

Thanks for any knowledge you might have for me.

although his studio is 24 bits it can most likely record in 16 bits aswell

so I'd digitally transfer them via adat lightpipe 1 cable in to pro tools one cable out of the adat

ok, thanks. Since i posted, I found someone that was saying that machines with 24 bit pro tools weren't compatible with 16 bit adats; the person didn't seem definite about it however.

Would the lightpipe cables be able to go right into a digi001 interface, mbox etc or would there need to be some other converter in the process? I've seen all these $500 converters that will get adat to protools, but was hoping to find a cheaper method than that.

worse comes to worse just analog out of the adat to analog into pro tools. you really won't notice a difference.

Connect the Light pipe out of the ADAT to the ADAT input on the 001.
Make an audio track for each ADAT track.
Set the input of each Pt audio track to one of the ADAT inputs.
Record enable each track.
Set the word clock reference in PT to the ADAT input.
Press record in PT, press play on the ADAT.

There is no issue between the 16 bit vs 24 bit. PT will pad zeros onto the 8 extra bits. As soon as you do anything in PT all 24 bits will be put to use.

We do this a lot, let me know if you have any other questions.

Steve

We used to use an ADAT I/O here, but after so many problems with it, we gave up and now just transfer ADAT tracks through the analog outs of the ADAT. It would be difficult to notice a difference!
You can use midi time code to sync the ADAT to protools, something like a JL Cooper DataSync is good for this.
You can also use a pre-amp if you want to get clever and try to "color" the sound.
Dave.

Making the ADAT I/O (For use with NuBus systems) work properly was always a combination of dumb luck and having a chicken foot for a keychain. I hated that thing.

The ADAT Bridge (Used with PCI systems) has always worked perfectly. You just need to remember to set your clocks correctly.

i was suspecting that running them out directly wouldn't be so awful, but i'm going to give the optical i/o a shot first anyway.

thanks!

In my experiance, I've just connected my adat to the digi001 via lightpipe.
Set the digi as the wordclock master, and set your sample rate correctly, and you're made.
