Drive formatting

Hi guys+gals

How many of you are running your media drives with HFS+ (ie extended) formatting. Any horror stories? Any real advantage over HFS?

if you have a TDM system, you must have drivers formatted HFS+... I think the only HFS "advantage" is that you will have the same file (i.e. WAV or MOV) eating more disk space tham HFS+
HFS is an older mac formatting system than HFS+...
So, have no doubt!

I've been all HFS+ for lots of comercials and three films. No problems.

The only concern I remember with HFS+ formatting relates to the AV Option, because the Digi compatibility spcs asked for HFS on the video drives. I don´t know if this is still the case. On audio drives there is absolutely no problem with HFS+.

I use HFS only. I've had problems with HFS+ disk at higher sample rates with long TC lock up times when scoring. The computer has a hard time finding free space to record on (especially when the disk is over 50% full) and won't allow PT HD kick into record, not a good thing when you have 100+ musicians on stage. HFS+ works great at 44.1/48, but your asking for trouble if you record at 88.2/96.

It is true that HFS formatted disk files take up more space, crossfades and session data will be larger. However, in my case, I only record with my PT HD systems and don't do any editing. If that is what you do, then there is no advantage to using HFS+ formatting. You would have to have a bunch of :15 second (1.7 MB @ 44.1k) or less files to notice a diffrence.

Digiengineer - I've had this same long TC lock-up times traced back to HFS+ drives with my MIX systems. (44.1 or 48K) Not great when it takes over 1 minute to lock!

So all my Audio drives get HFS formatting.
