True. I don't know if they've run out of new things to implement, or if Steve Jobs' passing meant the end of their innovation, but Apple events are rarely exciting. Boring even. I remember having to take time to learn and study the changes in a new OS. Now, after I upgrade, the only noticeable difference is the new wallpaper. I miss that excitement.

On the upside, because these OS upgrades are so minimalistic, they're not tough to accommodate. I know people are having trouble with Sonoma, as people have had trouble with every single upgrade, but I've not personally had many issues with an OS increase (knock on wood) and it's not because I upgrade late -- I tend to go early.

Given that after every PT update, half of the DUC chimes in with "I wish they'd just fix bugs instead of introducing new features," I'd think Apple's approach of late would be welcomed. Security updates, bug fixes, and some minor quality of life improvements — sounds good to me.

Ha. These aren't bug fix releases. They are breaking plenty of things.
Sometimes for no reason (change just for change sake -- this has been a discussion at Apple among the higher-ups.)

Back in the day, DigiDesign had separate feature upgrades and bugfix updates (often only partially tested).

Avid has now taken the stance that there is one release every quarter, and in exceptional circumstances additional fix releases.

Whichever you like more is a personal opinion.

I think it's always a mixed bag. They (Avid, Apple, whomever) fix some things, they break some things, then add features which often bring new bugs. It's always been this way since software got more complex. Best thing for your sanity is to work around the bugs cuz you'll never have a perfect system. Stay near the cutting edge but not on it (i.e. wait for the .1 OS updates, or later).

Will Avid ever be ready for an OS update on release?

That is not the plan. That would indicate we no longer care about our customer base. If we made apps for hobbyists, sure... but people's livelihoods rely on our products, working as best as we can make it, so wherever possible, we run exhaustive testing.

We do rigorous testing AFTER an OS gets released to the public... because no matter how many pre-release versions Apple sends its developers, there are always changes that happen between pre-release and "gold" releases. There have been plenty of times in history where companies like Avid have gotten burned by qualifying too early.

I can name several times where we were about to qualify a version and in the 11th hour one of the quality assurance testers found a glitch that required some change to the code.

Also, Apple makes too many changes to the OS for us to safely qualify existing versions of our products to run on a brand new dot-zero of a macOS. So, always always always expect a new version to come out which is qualified.

I can see the point and think it is a major pita caused by Apple.

But even pro users are forced to get new hardware that is not able to run older MacOS versions. They are left out of the equation here.

You do lot need to ‚certify‘ for a .0 release for sure.

But you could maybe release a version that is compatible and iron out the big bugs?
Or give out a public beta, so people in the situation mentioned can continue working?

Pro users won’t take the risk anyways unless they absolutely have to.
I had to twice in my career. One time it all was ok, the other time I was facing serious downtime.

My previous studio 2012 Mac Mini was replaced by a 2023 Mac Mini M2 Pro this week. It came with Sonoma on it.

I am more of a semi-retired pro so I guess I can be a pioneer.
