Default Calibrating w/ voltmeter

Hi there!

I want to calibrate a 888 interface (used on an Avid Composer system)but do not have trusty VU meter or signal gen. I remember doing a calibration using a voltmeter (did this with someone who knew) a few years ago. We used the 'play calibration tone' function of the Avid audio tool, which generated the signal to all the outputs. One was holding the probes on the connectors pins (2 and 3?) and the other was reading the voltmeter and trimming the pots. I *think* we were trying to get 1.192V readings but don't remember what was the level of the generated tone. I've searched the posts here but found only confusing answers (for me, since I'm not an audio specialist). What reading should I get and at what level? Is there a datasheet that would specifify the volts for specfic tone levels? Suppose I read 1.2V at -18dB, then I switch my tone level to -14dB, I should read (1.5V?). Also, if I use some of the outputs at -10db (switched with the jumpers), what reading should I achieve? Once this is done, I think I could use the procedure described in the manual (using the calibration tool)to calibrate my inputs, sending +4db outputs to +4db inputs and -10db outputs to -10db inputs?

Thanks for any help.
Chris
