Default record what i hear on speakers

Is there a way on protools to record something that is playing on the computer. Example: There is something on youtube that I would like to use as an intro to a song. I don't want to play it on the laptop, record it on the mic and into protools on IMac. I want to preserve the quality of the sound. I know that there are other programs such as Creative Recording that do it. Does Protools do it also?

Thanks

P.S. spare the copyright talk off youtube...that's just an example.

Most people simply take an audio cable either stereo mini jack or digital out and bring that into their Pro Tools audio interface. This will preserve exactly what you're hearing and bring it into Pro Tools and it would probably be the cheapest way, even cheaper than buying said software to do the same thing.

There are programs like Audio Hi-Jack Pro that will route audio between apps on the Mac but I believe it Hi Jacks the stream between Core Audio and since Pro Tools doesn't use the Core Audio driver for playback, it's not possible.

But it IS possible for Audio Hijack to hijack streams from, say, YouTube on safari or firefox and then to import the file into protools.

There are many freeware or shareware apps that will capture audio and/or video from websites or from what you are seeing/hearing. Once captured you can simply import the file into protools

Let's say I use the way you described with a cable into the PT interface. I would take an audio cable and plug it into the headphone jack and into a line in?

your iMac has digital outs from the headphone output. You need a 3.5mm optical to regular optical cable. then go from the optical out of the iMac to the optical input of the M-Audio Project Mix I/O. Then you have no sound degradation. Just remember tho that the audio coming off Youtube is already in mp3 form PLUS whatever streaming codec is applied by Youtubes servers so the quality will be less than .mp3 quality, but at least with this digital transfer you are not making it even worse by adding D?A conversion into copper and back into another A/D converter. Make sense?

i have never ordered from this site, it was the first thing Google pulled up, I only put the link for a picture of the cable you will need.
