Default SPDIF Input on 196 io Sync

I have a keyboard connected to my 192io on the SPDIF input on the back. The session is 24bit 44.1 When I listen to keyboard I'm getting digital clicking sounds. If I set the sync source to External SPDIF it goes away. Is this the only way to avoid this ? Having PT sync to SPDIF External. I thought PT automatically sample rate converts on all digital inputs so why does it need to be set to External sync ?

PT 7.1cs10 HD2 10.4.6

the reason is because you have to synchronize the word clocks between the digital source and the digital receiver. there is always a "master" in a session. i don't know you're particular
keyboard, but it's possible that it can be configured to have an external device (such as the 192)
act as the clock master. if this is the case, then you could leave the 192 as the clock master and
run the S/PDIF out from the 192 to your keyboard's S/PDIF in.

in all likelihood (since not many keyboards have external clock syncs), you'll have to have
the keyboard act as the clock source and have the 192 slave to that. if you do that, then
the 192 will detect the sample rate and adjust accordingly.

hope that helps,
jeff

You have to select 'Sample Rate Convert' in your hardware set-up.

SRC only applies to AES/EBU, TDIF, or adat optical signals coming into the digital i/o card. It won't have any effect on the enclosure connections. The second poster's answer is correct with regard to digital sync.

It is possible to take SPDIF in through the AES ports and apply SRC. Just need a break-out loom and and an impedance/level shift transformer. Neutrik do these.

Thanks for the responses. The keyboard is a Fantom original. It does have optical and SPDIF digital outs, no ins though. So I guess I can go from the Optical digital out into the Optical digital in on the Digital IO card and sample rate convert and have PT be the master. I just don't want to mess around with the Clock Master when switching between sessions... might leave it set the wrong way. I'll give it a try.

Personally, I would rather sync clocks than do an SRC (which is not an artifact
free process). if your instrument is incapable of producing the sample rate your
project is at .. then, you don't have much a choice...
