Routing question for experts
Have a question,
I need to do parallel M/S processing on a stereo track. What's the best setup for this? Duplicate the stereo track to another track insert the MS matrix, route the output to a stereo buss (7-8-, create 3 mono aux tracks with input buss 7 , input buss 8, input buss 7 inverted. OR Stereo track with stereo aux send (7-8), create stereo aux input(7-8) with MS matrix inserted, make on that aux track another stereo aux send(9-10),prefader. create 3 mono aux tracks , inputs 9, 10, 9 inverted Will the end result ( delay, phasing) be the same ? Think about it |

Re: Routing question for experts
Routing (from left to right):
*Your source is a stereo audio track; *Route this track's outputs to <bus 1-2> *Create a stereo Aux track *Set it's inputs to <bus 1-2> *Insert Waves S1 MS Matrix plugin on it (encoding stage) *Route it's outputs to <bus 3-4> *Create 2 x mono Aux tracks *Set the input of the first one to <bus 3> *Route it's output to <bus 5> *Set the input of the second one to <bus 4> *Route it's output to <bus 6> *Create another stereo Aux track *Set it's inputs to <bus 5-6> *Insert Waves S1 MS Matrix plugin on it (decoding stage) *Route it's outputs to <bus 7-8> *Create a stereo audio track *Set it's inputs to <bus 7-8> *Set it's outputs to <1-2> for monitoring *This track is the final destination - record results here! ********************************************** Concept: One of the mono aux tracks controls all stereo information, while the other controls all mono information; You can change the "balance" between mono/stereo ("stereo enhancer" is the most common application, and is achieved by turning the mono aux that controls the stereo information up); You can also listen to stereo-only and mono-only by muting one or the other; Finally, you can use pluginz (EQ, compression) on each mono aux separately (use delay compensation to preserve phase); The safest way to make sure it all worx the way it's supposed to is to mute the mono aux that controls the mono information, so that only the stereo information is playing; Then - press the MONO button on your console/monitors controller, and notice the sounds disappearing completely! Re: Routing question for experts
Thanks all !!!.
I know how M/S works. My question was , which one of my above routing methods was the best. I did the test. I recorded both methods to two stereo files, imported it back in PT,inverted one of the files, but it didn't cancelled eah other out 100%, maybe 92%. So I wander hat could cause that? |

Re: Routing question for experts
Tal,
At the decoding stage, It should be the S1 shuffler plugin set with M/S as input instead of the S1 matrix , right? , or am I wrong. Either way , when I do the mono trick (muting the mono aux) it doesn"t dissapear completely. |

Re: Routing question for experts
The reason it wouldn't cancel completely is because you're not using the right plugin on the decode stage! You must use the SAME plugin for both encode annd decode stages. It's the Waves S1 MS Matrix (the one that has no controls).

Re: Routing question for experts
Tal, thanks , found it.
It's the decoding stereo aux that needs to be mono( pan in mid), not the monitor of course. Any more in depth tricks for this technique? Is it possible to split the Side info into L and R, so that all Left info in the normal stereo tracks is separated from the Right info? |
