Default Avid 16X16 AES Encl

So I have the analog 16X16 and will use with SSL Sigma. Currently only have one 16X16, but will grab another depending on the answer to this question.

So does the Digital AES Encl 'hijack' one of the stereo I/O pairs? Or is it an independent (17-18) stereo pair? I'm guessing it hijacks a pair.

It's not hijacking. It's called choosing what you want to use. The following fact has remained unchanged since HD interfaces were introduced:

The DigiLink cable between interface and computer can only carry 16+16 ins and outs, which means one box can have gazillion ports in it but in the hardware setup you must choose which 16 you want to be using. And you can daisy-chain two interfaces for a total of 32 i/o via single DigiLink cable.

The now discontinued HD cards had one DigiLink port per card. Today, having one HDN/HDX card gives you two ports.

Are you sure about that? I have a 16x16 and an input expanded 192 chained together going into one DigiLink cable connected to an HDN card. 32 in 24 out analog. Plus the 192 has another 8 channels of digital out via either AES/EBU or optical. These are available in the IO dialog in addition to the analog 16 in 8 out. But it looks like the 16x16 only allows 16 IO where analog or digital are options but cannot be extended beyond 16. Hmmm. That's more like each IO unit maxes out at 16, not the DigiLink cable.

It is a spec of a DigiLink cable to pass 16 i/o from any box, and max 2 boxes can be daisy-chained.

If you have 2 interfaces, the 16 i/o of the daisy-chained box are routed to channels 17-32 but in no way the primary box can use 32 i/o directly
