Default New iMac getting CPU warnings, but...

My pro tools system usage says 8%?

I have an iMac i5 quad core 2.7 gHz. I am using an 11rack as my sound card. Pro tools is updated and so is my operating system. My set up is just that simple, new set up by the way.

I have 8 tracks of recorded material, very simple stuff. I have 8 eq and 8 mcdsp analog 2, so two plugs on each track.I inserted amplitude 3 on a track I was recording bass. This is whenn the program stops and gives me the warning that i do not have enough cpu and to delete plugs. Wtf?

I never saw this with my i7 quad core windows system...I must be doing something wrong I am unaware of. I thought this iMac would perform much better than this.

Thanks for any help!

Hmm, not sure if it's related, on my 8-Core Mac 2.8gHz with an HD Native card, I too am getting lots of CPU warning errors. This in sessions sometimes with NO information, no plugins, maybe 1 track.

So there seems to be some weird bug in PT10 that is causing this.

In my case, I just hit OK and continue. But even with my buffer setting at 1024, I'm still getting them.

Tim

Hey Tim. Yeah mine stops but I can just hit record again. This really should not happen, sure hope more folks come forward in an effort to get this resolved. If there are more folks?

Are either of you making sure to set your processor for one less than the total available for processing rtas?

In the Imac, you would set 3 of the 4 processors for rtas, leaving one available for other functions. (that Imac does not have hyper-threading).

In the 8 core, it would show as 16 cores, and you can try leaving 15 for Rtas.

Nope, I missed that....but changing today. Hopefully it is that simple!

When you do that, you can also bump the processors that handle rtas processing up to around 95-99% (from the default of 85%).

I made the changes and what little time I had tonight I did not run into the CPU warning. Tomorrow I will spend more time and post the results.

Thanks!

this issue seems to be a common problem in early version of a new pro tools release. I had frequent problems up until 8.0.4 and 9.0.3. 10 has been running great but for me I can't run a 96 Khz session so there is always a cpu overload message for something right lol. if it says you have 8 cores, give pro tools 6 cores/threads leaving 2 which means you are giving the system an entire core. If you turn off the hyper threading feature you should only see 4 and you should assign 3 of those cores.

with pro tools 9 a normal session for me which is maybe 16 tracks and tons of plugs would run about 70% of my system. In PT10 the same session uses about 35%, they definitely improved the coding for me to be seeing results like this.
