Virtual Instruments tracks not playing all the time?

The MIDI assignments are lost randomly went a Session is opened.
No error code. Only no sound from MIDI!

The MIDI playback stops on various MIDI instruments as the CPU load rises to circa 50% approx. Audio tracks are NOT affected.
In general, same as above. No error but the Pro Tools CPU usage meter is your best guide. Keep and eye on it when using active MIDI tracks.

I've been getting this one quite often as well -

Mainly after a CPU hiccup.
MIDI to hardware instruments continues, just not to VI's.

I'm using NI, Spitfire and Eastwest mainly.

Intel mac on 2023.3.

Have you tried "All MIDI Notes Off" (from the Event dropdown)?

Command-Shift-period

Do it continuously, like 5-10 times, usually gets my MIDI and VIs "unstuck".

Not sure if it will work here but give it a shot.

What I've been told is that PT does not send note off messages when stopping playback, but instead sends a general CC123 message, which should/would have worked in the outboard-synths day, but not sure how it works with the panacea of Virtual Instruments these days. A friend who's developing Kontakt Instrument has been having real headaches with it in Pro Tools.

I was wondering if it's been happening on Windows.
I've experienced the lost assignments after opening a saved session in the past but not since 2018.
Have only had playback cut out using Toontrack EZplayer which is no longer supported.
Playing back a drum clip on the timeline rather than the plug-in resets it in that case.

So far lost assignments haven't happened in my 2022.7 sessions. I use just a few up to maybe 8 instruments. So I can only wonder if that is a factor or not.
Thanks for verifying that it does happen on Windows.

Looking forward to seeing what issues have been addressed in 2023.9.

Thanks for posting. Stuck notes on are generally where the MIDI note off command has not been received by the device.

Note, this is the opposite to faults listed i.e. MIDI notes not sounding.

In another twist to the "The MIDI assignments are lost randomly went a Session is opened." error now in 2023.9 ventura when I have this problem I go to the midi instrument output assign and instead of "track name- virtual instrument" I just get a list of alphabetical VIs and MIDI enabled plugins in the session, but no track name making this error even more of a PITA to correct.

again I mention I only have this when I've swapped out an instrument for another on a instrument track, I normally avoid this workflow but must have slipped up on a new session. I cannot reproduce it every time so hard to report
