trim plug ins /gain staging
I get the concept of gain stage and it looks like you use the trim plug in, Also slate looks to have a trim plug in as well or you could adjust the wav. Everything I have seen on gain stage is you try to get your tracks so out of thr master buss it is -18. What I am not sure is this before or after your master buss plug ins? Seems like more processing you do the gain pumps back up especially on larger sessions. Any tips would be great. I just read one where someone but a trip plug in on their master buss before all the processing to help with keeping a good level.

Re: trim plug ins /gain staging
I think the main thing is that the signal doesn't clip anywhere, so the -18 is a good ballpark suggestion but not a rule. It depends on what you plan to do with the mix afterwards - if it's going to be mastered, then the mastering engineer will need some headroom to work with. If not, then you might want to push the levels a little hotter to get a "louder" mix. Using some bus compression or other processing can help get the mix louder without clipping.
The Trim plugin is very useful though I tend to use a console emulation plugin when mixing to add a little more character. I have the Slate Trimmer plugin though I haven't used it much. I can't tell from their site if it merely allows you to adjust levels or it if have any type of console trim emulation.

trim plug ins /gain staging
Quote:
There were complaints when VMR first came out that there wasn’t a way to pad down hot levels feeding the modules, so they released this utility plugin. Unless you’re invested in the VMR ecosystem, it offers nothing more than the Trim plug in PT. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Sardi; 12-24-2022 at 10:20 PM. |
