Best OS for MBP 2016 / Scarlett 4i4 / ProTools
Hi, this is a pre-emptive OS question (not troubleshooting):
I am wondering if anyone has advice about what is the best OS to use on a 2016 MacBook for ProTools 12 with a Scarlett (4i4). (Late 2016 MBP is 15 inch, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, Intel Graphics 530 1536 MB) I am upgrading from Sierra, and according to the documentation for both Scarlett and ProTools I can choose from Mohave 10.14.6, Catalina 10.15.7, or Big Sur 11.6 (all are compatible). According to ProTools, there appear to be some known issues with Big Sur (namely, users may experience graphical issues when scrolling), so I think it's down to Mojave or Catalina. If anyone has had any issues or luck with one or the other on the same or similar setup, I'd love to hear it! My thought process is that the OS needs to be advanced enough for bug fixes / to not fall behind too quickly, but not so advanced my old computer can't 'keep up'. I've had many, many compatibility issues and bugs in the past, so I'm trying to be extra thoughtful this time around. I do intend to follow the computer optimization protocol for any OS I choose. Thank you! |

The clue here is your version of PT. With the very last version of PT12 it seems it supports MacOS up to High Sierra. Compatibility chart here: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...tibility-Chart You might also have a look thru here: Help Us Help You

Re: Best OS for MBP 2016 / Scarlett 4i4 / ProTools
Thanks for the response! I’m purchasing a subscription to Protools (academic discount), so I imagine it will be the latest version, Or I’ll know better once I buy it. (That’s why I couldn’t specify. I’ve used ProTools in the past but I’m starting over).
I must have read that Avid chart wrong. When I looked at it I thought it must go up to Big Sur (aligned with PT version 12/2021) and not stop at High Sierra (aligned with PT version 12/2020). If that’s the case I need to bring my computer back down My 2016 MBP is making a random snapping sound so I upgraded it from Sierra to Mojave, then when the noise persisted, I brought it to the Apple store (they cleaned the fan but couldn’t figure it out), and currently I’m upgrading it to Catalina hoping that will magically fix the snapping sound. But if the latest version of Protools on that chart is 12/2020 - High Sierra I’ve been going about this all wrong Thanks again! Last edited by Mogwok; 01-24-2022 at 05:17 PM. |
