Default Help... Anyone using RME hdspe madi fx with success ?

I'm trying to get the new RME hdspe madi fx card working with Protools.
I've spent a few days trying every possible configuration without success.
I'm using a Mac Pro. Now on OS Lion 10.7.4 ( but I've tried every version since
the Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8).
I'm using an SSL Xlogic Alpha Link Madi and an Antelope Iscochrome word clock.
Protools is now on 10.3.1, but I also tried version 9.6 and all versions since 10.0
Protools always crashes after the "DAE" screen.

I have absolutely no problem with other DAW (Steinberg...)

Is this a driver problem ?

Thanks for helping.

Yes, I saw your thread in RMEs Forum. I am having the same issue but not solution yet. I am hoping AVID is able to help us. Maybe test it and release new drivers that support the card. Current PT drivers are probably not able to handle all the I/O.

Please let me know if you find out anything. Thanks!

Avid doesn't make drivers for another company. PT with third party cards allows 32i/o maximum.
Did you try to repair permissions in the disk utillity?

We had ours for a day. We only needed the coax I/O to interface with our euphonix. The coax starts at input 129 (actually 131 because of the AES inputs). PT only sees I/O 1-32. The problem is that the RME control panel (midi setup) does not allow for disabling or reassigning unused ports. So we shipped the card to RME and they replaced it with the original HDSPE card, and all is good. With the original card you must choose between optical or coax, but since we only needed 32 of the 64 I/O, we were fine.

In our other room we had a similar situation with our pair of Lynx Aurora 16s. PT only saw the first interface as 16 analog + 16 digital (=32). Lynx made a driver that allowed you to flash them as 16 channel analog, so both showed up as 16x16.

I would think that Lynx could write a driver that would allow you to disable unused ports, or at least allow you to rearrange I/Os to allow for a customized workflow. Short sighted on RME's part IMO.

Hello,

hobiwan - I assume you know that with PT only the first 32 I/O will work with 3rd party interfaces. You probably do, just checking.

SSL figured out the PT crashing issue with their madi card - when PT sees a 3rd party interface with too much I/O it crashes. Not sure what that limit is. SSL released an update for one of their cards that allows reducing the number of I/O ports presented to the OS, PT works fine on it now.

Unfortunately RME does not have that functionality on MacOS, which would be a benefit for other daw users as well because it would reduce the Coreaudio load when not using ports. Maybe eventually.

Hugh
