If you have very specific reasons to stay at 10.6.x then stay ...
If not then move to 10.7 ...

10.6 is coming to an end ... no 2 ways around it wether you like it or not. Soon most software developers will even stop supporting it.

Chris
I say completely the opposite.

If you have no reason to leave 10.6.x, why buy 10.7.x until it's actually required by the software you own? I didn't upgrade to 10.6 until PT9 forced me to. If it works, it works, and 10.6.8 works great with PT10 for me.

Well we're sortof saying the same. Stay with 10.6 if you feel you have to.
But in the long run you 'have to' go to 10.7 anyhow so you may as well consider doing it now.

I'm using them on both 10.7 and 10.6 on another system. No difference as far as PT goes ... both equally happy systems.

Lion is a sad chapter of OS X , trying to merge the toy iOS into OS X.
Unfortunately that is the way Apple will go in the future, the same OS for both your 24 core Mac Pro and your iPod touch.
If you are about to install a new system go Lion. If you already are on 10.6, stay there as long as you can.

My studio Mac Pro is on 10.6 and my office iMac is on Lion and man... not a single feature that is better, but your computer seems to lost half of its CPU speed.

10.7.2 combo just does not work.
PT10 loads and i can create a new session.
But can't open older PT10 sessions or import tracks...zero nothing just get PT quit windows crash.
Only compatibility from avid i saw was it supports LIon but no version is named. Will do a last asap test with 10.7 retail only.

PM: IS it Ok to run 10.6.5 combo instead of 10.6.8 for PT10.
10.6.5 combo is the best i.ve had so far on snow.

peace

I have heard no compelling reasons to upgrade to Lion, all the feedback I have read is negative. Contrary to Apple's progression, Microsoft's Vista was unpopular, while Windows 7 received much better reception.

Looks like if you adopt HDX cards, Lion is mandatory, but otherwise, what does Lion add?

The last noteworthy feature update I thought was worth the price was from Tiger, when Leopard added Time Machine.

Lion is, a joke in my opinion. I think it's set up for iphone users who like to "hack the system" and feel like they are cool when they find a way to unlock hidden features that never should have been hidden... like the ability to actually open the programs you've installed, or navigate your boot drive from the finder. I have only spent less than an hour with Lion, but I don't see how to do these simple, essential tasks in it so far. These type of things should be obvious, and not require some secret hack to unlock.

navigate your boot drive from the finder
See if you have this option...
  1. Finder > Preferences > Sidebar >
That should bring up "Show these items in the sidebar"
  2. Check the box next to "Hard disks" under "DEVICES"
Or...
  1. Open a new Finder window
  2. Devices (click Show next to Devices if none are there)
  3. Click on your Mac in the device list
  4. Drag your boot drive to Favorites
  5. Move it up or down to where you want it to appear in Favorites
This annoyed me as well until I figured it out.

if you go the lion way... make a clean install of both...lion and pt.

So far i had no problems. But i checked alone 4 hours for the compatibility of my plugins for lion and pt10.

Before that, i was under 10.6.8 with PT9.03 and it was not rock stable but quite okay.

I did a upgrade to pt10 because of eucon and gain control...
now I find my system is faster and my workflow is also better.
About lion i like more and more launch pad.
But that is not enough for an OS upgrade ;-)

Anyway, if you have to do a clean install, maybe to be sure with protools too, than you can go with lion. If not - don't change a running system.
