Turbo Boost question
I have turned off Turbo Boost in Pro Tools Play Back Engine as it was making my Mac Book Pro fans sound even on simple tasks like opening a couple of instrument plug ins.
Am I supposed to leave it checked on? what difference is going to make? Many thanks for whatever pointers |

Re: Turbo Boost question
AFAIK, Turbo boost off is the preferred setting. This is for stability AND fan noise

Re: Turbo Boost question
My two previous macs were a I5 mini and a I7 mini, both 2018. TB is a intel processor thing that kicks the processor speed and its temperature goes into the roof. The I5 didn't have it, and I had no fan noise problems. The I7 has TB that I noticed immediately and hated.
My PT 2020.12 don't have the option in playback engine, so I bought TurboboostSwitcher and left TB off most of the time. My unscientific estimate was that TB gave me about 15-20% extra power. I had no problem choosing a silent fan and not having those extra cpu cycles. Added: I never noticed TB causing any stability problems w/PT.)

For me, I mostly use ProTools daily in my work to edit single audio files in one single track. Therefore, if I do an Audiosuite render on the whole file, TurboBoost ON is totally my personal preference. Why? I barely use my CPU and memory for THAT editing task, so TB ON never causes fan noise. When I run Audiosuite sometimes the fan noise turns on for a couple minutes of faster processing, then I'm back to work sooner and the fan turns back off in a couple minutes. For hours of music mixing and mastering, it might be better to turn it OFF, I agree, than revved to the max just because, so in this way certain users appreciate the choice. Re: Turbo Boost question
Its a setting that really needs to be tested on each and every system so the user can decide if either way is better. I have seen time in the past where 2 very similar systems will come back with TB on being better on one rig, while TB off is better on the other rig.

Re: Turbo Boost question
Where is this turbo boost setting in PT? I'm on 2021.6 on a 2012 MacPro cheesegrater running OSX 10.13.6 and not seeing it.

Re: Turbo Boost question
Playback engine dialog. You may be on too old a version to have it, I can't remember when it was introduced.

Re: Turbo Boost question
Thanks. Just looked and the setting is not there. Like you say it may be the old PT I'm running.
