Please help: suddenly PTLE doesn't play or -9093

I'm running Windows XP Pro on an approved machine, PTLE 6.4. Everything's been running smoothly for some time. But today, I open up an extremely simple session (one mono audio track) and try to play it. It either doesn't play at all (no response), or will play for a maximum of a couple seconds and then I get the USB interrupts warning (9093) - PTLE in general is very lethargic. But I open up task manager, and it essentially isn't hogging the processor or anything.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing has changed on this system. BUT, one thing:

I have my audio drive back itself up (to a third internal drive) on a nightly basis automatically with Window's backup utility. Usually that takes all of an hour or whatever. But today, 13 hours after it started, it's still backing up, and shows that it has 8 hours to go. I cancelled that out and deleted the backup file (figuring it to be corrupted or something).

I'm ok with reinstalling PTLE or even the OS if need be, but I'd love to have some suggestions for other fixes before going to that length.

Check to see if your drives are still on UDMA, or that they reverted to PIO.
