Could a problem with my XMON have blown my tweeters?
Here's my setup and situation...
D-Command with XMON. Monitoring with 3 pair of speakers from my XMON: 1) Main Outs (1 & 5 for L & R): Focal SM8's (Tweeters blown) 2) Alt Outs (1 & 5 for L & R): Augsperger Dual 15" powered by a pair of Haflers with Bryston crossover (OK) 3) Mini Outs: NS10's (Tweeters blown) Last night I heard a few crackles (ala digital pops) for about 15 seconds. Subsequently, the tweeters went out on my mains and minis, but not on my alts. The pops weren't loud at all. I've blown tweeters in the past with accidental volume blasts- I'm familiar with what it takes to blow them out. What's even more strange to me is that both the mains and minis went out simultaneously while I was only listening back on the minis AND, meanwhile, the alts suffered no damage. I've swapped outputs for all. All outputs working fine on each pair. But, the tweeters on the Focals and NS10s definitely seem to be blown. Could this have been a problem with my XMON? I'm suspicious... Thx. |

Re: Could a problem with my XMON have blown my tweeters?
that is an odd failure
any power problems that might have affected the amps?

Re: Could a problem with my XMON have blown my tweeters?
Thx for the reply Craig... No power problems and no problems with the amps. Had my tech come in and check the power, all three outputs for DC and a bunch of other stuff. Spoke to a Digi rep as well. Best thing we could come up with is that the pops were digital noise (from Pro Tools or the 192) that included supersonic frequencies that took out the tweeters. Farfetched, i know. But, it's the best we could come up with. This is about the strangest studio gremlin I've ever encountered.

Did you have Altaverb open on a track at the time?

Re: Could a problem with my XMON have blown my tweeters?
Hi subwoof. Thx for ur reply... No, I didn't have Altiverb open. But, it looks like it was another plugin. Before I name that plugin, though, I wanna make 100% sure it was the culprit. Otherwise, everyone who's helped me on this (including Digi, Focal and my tech who checked every connection, digital & analog, as well as my power) seems to agree that the digital error noise probably put out some ultrasonic frequencies that took out the tweeters. I dunno. Still seems very strange and suspicious.
