Default Hard drive pre- intel, post- intel

Not sure which category this should be in.

Have a glyph hard drive I used with my pre-intel G5. Just bought a new imac.
Will I be able to use the same hard drive to record, or do I need a new one?

Should not be a problem, although a modern drive will most likely be much faster than a G5 era drive.

I would reformat with Disk Utility. (assuming you don't need the data on it)

Thanks Kasper.

I'd rather not lose the data. I guess I could transfer it to internal drive, reformat, then return it to glyph drive. Or, just buy a new one.

Given it's age, if there's anything of value on that drive, I'd back it up somehow. Bly-ray, DVD, another HD.. something.

Doesn't happen often, but when a drive fails, it can be disastrous ... juz sayin'...

And with the Glyph, you're paying for the case anyway. If the chipset in the enclosure will support a large size drive, crack it open and put a new HD in the Glyph ..... my 2c.

It's not as old as the G5 was. I bought it at some point when the older drive started to fail. But, probably 2-3 years old maybe?

On another note, if my interface ( just bought the mbox pro ) is firewire, should I get a firewire drive and run in line, or make sure to get a usb drive? Does it matter? The glyph has both.

It's probably just fine, but I'd still back up your important stuff.

Not really my area of expertise, all my drives are esata, but firewire has always been better than USB. I think USB is specifically NOT qualified for use with PT (although that may be changing)

Have to agree. Plus, you likely want the drive reformatted anyway as it may be FAT32 and you need to be HFS+ with your new Mac. Transfer all the files to another drive, reformat(or replace the drive as suggested) and copy the files back afterwards.

For raw drives, the WD Caviar Black are a popular choice for recording. Larger versions have a 64MB cache, but the 32MB is plenty decent

Well, I realized, I started off this thread with incorrect information.
My current external drive is a G drive, not a glyph. Brain fart.

Anyway, bought another g drive as well today. Figuring I can record to the new one and backup to the old one, or vice versa.

Is it advisable to have the virtual instruments on and external drive as well?
