State of h264/265 support in PT
Guys maybe you can chime in with your experience here.
I occasionally work on TV shows that just need a little care from the sound department. They are usually VERY long (3hrs+) For my other jobs I usually ask for DnxHD, but the amount of data just seems inappropriate for those kind of jobs. Do you have any experience with the state of h264/5 support in PT 2022.4 and could maybe hint me into a more workable solution? Thanks

Re: State of h264/265 support in PT
I use H264 on long and short form… definitely a bit sluggish compared to ProRes or DNX but it has not been an issue for me. Haven’t worked with H265 yet.

Re: State of h264/265 support in PT
Playback sync is sloppy and scrubbing is choppy. General sluggishness. I avoid it whenever possible but it can be done.
I feel like H265 has been a little better but it probably depends on the bit rate and keyframe interval. Always remember to check your video sync offset when you change codecs.

Re: State of h264/265 support in PT
Better (lighter/smaller) than ProRes or ProRes LT is ProRes Proxy. 44% the size of ProRes LT. And for audio work, pretty great looking. I don't bother with the others. It's the closest to DNxHD36 rates (which was the standard for Skywalker)
Still won't be as small as h264/265 but smooth as silk. And, yeah, I'll take anything submitted and convert it with ff-Works (another program, like ShutterEncoder, that is a ffmpeg GUI front end -- they both use the same "engine" so should be the same speed to do decoding/encoding)

Adobe Media Encoder is a great conversion tool (among many other things)
If you have an Adobe subscription, check into that. Its what I use, mainly because lots of people in picture departments are using it as well. |
