How long is the warranty?

1 year?

once the warranty is over, I plan on modifying them with quieter fans.

my room is 69 degrees, and there is NOT anything hot below them, and there is plenty of air moving, and the backs of the racks are open.
The fans in the HD IO don't adjust according to temperature. At least, that's what I think, since they don't use a third wire that would receive a control impulse.
They are running the whole time at the same speed.

Replacing the fan is really worth it. The outcome is great, and it's really not difficult at all. Took me about 20 minutes from unscrewing the unit from the rack until it sat back there with the new fan.
Also, you do not even have to splice or cut wires. I removed the connector from the original fan and connected it to the wire of the new fan.

no, the fans dont change speed (as far as i can tell)

i thought you DID have to splice the 2 wires?

can you clarify how you did it?

and what fan you used?

and are the CFM the same?

thanks

No, you don't have to splice.
With a needle or a tweezer you can take the wires out of the connector, without "damaging" anything. So you just mount the original connector to the new fan (obviously you have to remove the connector of the new fan as well before you can do that). Just make sure, you put the wires to the right slots of the connector.

I used that fan:
http://www.silenx.com/quiet.fans.asp?sku=efx-08-15

Its CFM is 32. The original fan's CFM is 33,57 (http://www.cofan-usa.com/axial-fans/80x80x25-ii Model F-8025M12B II).

Any news on the interfaces with modded fans? do they still run fine?

I plan on doing the mods to a couple of Omnis and 8x8x8's

I have a Omni with the newest firmware next to me, and its pretty noise when its hot...

Still no issues with either, the modded Omni and the modded HD I/O. Running cool, running silent.

Huge improvement!

With 2-HDi/o 16x16's and 1-1921/0 the fan noise was driving me nuts. After installing Silenex fans in all 3, I'm noticing a big improvement in the noise floor in my control room. Now if I could just figure out how to get that fan on the HDX card quieter.
