Default First generation G5 with Panther 10.3.8 using PT 6

Hello folks,

Can someone tell me if it is OK to upgrade my FIRST(1st) GENERATION, G5, single processor 1.8 GHz with 3.5 GB DDR SDRAM of memory, which currently runs Mac OS X Panther 10.3.4 to the more recent Panther 10.3.8 ? Currenly I have Pro Tools 6.4 and I have had many problems before relating to upgrades and as a result has decided not to upgrade beyond 10.3.4 It seems as though many PT 6.4 users are running Panther 10.3.8 Are those PT 6.4 users running on Mac OS X 10.3.8 using a second generation G5 and above or are some of you 1st generation users?

Thanks

I'm too lazy to look for the link right now, but I usually keep up with that stuff as accurately as I can; I think Digi has only approved Mac operating systems up to 10.3.7 at this point. I usually upgrade to the latest approved OS. I think the best reason for not going beyond is that just in case that last "unapproved" version causes problems, it's a real PITA to un-upgrade (downgrade, I guess) to the previous OS since it usually means un-installing the OS.

10.3.8 is offically supported now.

In response to the first poster, I have a 2nd generation dual 2.5 G5 and don't have any problems. I'm using PTLE 6.4 and an Mbox.

Thanks Max Cooper and Slim Shady,

As Max stated, I too find it to be a discomfort, if I have to un-install then re-install my operating system software. Slim Shady mentioned that Digidesign now offically supports 10.3.8 Does this mean that all Power Macs running OS X 10.3.8 can us Pro Tools LE 6.4 whether it's a single or dual processor or whether it's a 1st generation model or later? I really dread having to un-install and then re-install both my operating software and PT software.

Yes. When digi qualifies an OS, it's across the board, not just for certain computer models. I appears they only qualified 6.7 though - here's the exact lingo:

Pro Tools LE 6.7 is officially supported on Mac OS X 10.3.2, 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.7, and 10.3.8 (Panther)

I'm still using 6.4 and have been using 10.3.8 since it came out and haven't had a single problem, so it's probably just that they stopped testing after they cleared 6.7 on 10.3.8 because they have more important stuff to test instead of older versions of PT. If you want to be 'official' though, I guess you'd need 6.7 to be officially supported on 10.3.8.

Hi reviewing members,

In my thread above, I forgot to mention that I am using PT LE 6.4 with a Digi002 unit. Can someone or Digidesign officially give me a quick answer as to whether or not I could upgrade to Mac OS X 10.3.8 if I am using PT LE 6.4 on a 1st generation PowerMac G5 with only a single processor?

slim, are you by any chance on a dual G5? I want to upgrade to 10.3.8 but I'm hearing at the apple forums that people with G5's are suddenly developing really annoying fan problems so I am reluctant and haven't gotten a straight answer from any dual processor G5 DUC'ers

Yes, it's a dual 2.5. Not having any problems to report in any area whatsoever, been running like a dream since I got it last year.
