Bricasti M7 Reverb almost became an AAX-DSP plugin

I just happen to catch a couple of comments over on a Gearslutz thread. This was off the topic of the thread, but the guy from Bricasti had actually gotten the M7 Reverb to work using 9 of the chips on an HDX card (which is half of them). Sounds like Avid wasn't interested in a plugin that used so many chips at once.

But wouldn't that have been nice!

that's a lot of DSP for one plug, but i bet tonnes of people would buy it and find workarounds!

Yeah, considering the lack of DSP plugins, it would make sense to offer it and let users decide. It wouldn't be the first time a plugin was a chip hog. From what I understand, the TDM version of Eleven was pretty intensive as well.

All they need to do is release a Digital only version of that box, but they won't. I begged years ago. Too much profit in those converters.

What do you mean? A box with only digital I/O or a proprietary DSP hardware platform?

Interesting topic about porting code into HDX DSP chips.

I have heard (not verified) that the new UAD AMS plug is exactly that. It is not an emulation of the RMX Reverb but a port of the code. Quite interesting if indeed this is true. And if UAD can do this for their DSP why can't AVID get this done for HDX DSP?

I would believe AVID would be more than interested in a Bricasti plug-in that is AAX DSP only. It would contradict the new native compatibility paradigm AVID is (wisely) trying to enforce though - if you wouldn't be able to do offline-bounces with this any more, that would be a clear disadvantage.

Back in the day of TC TDM plug-ins, people bought into HD cards to be able to run algorithms that were otherwise only available in the form of hardware processors. If this would still work today, though, I doubt. What price point would you set for such a plug-in - like $2000? People would compare it to Phoenixverb, TSAR or Lexicon PCM Native that sell for way less. Add on top that it would only be useful on HDX2 systems - how many HDX users out there have more than one HDX card?

I have 5 HDX systems of more then (1) card. But this is more for IO count then DSP usage. We record many shows of 128 tracks and above.

I would think great to have a HDX Process card for people / companies wanting to record large sessions but not needing the DSP. That was the reason back in the day of Accel that these cards were available.

But again, the corporate engine needs to be fed.
