Default PT 2022 release?

Avid joins a lot other companies, like UAD who also don't support Monterey across all of their products yet. Even Apple is having a heck of a time with Logic.

How often in the last 10 years has Avid even offered an update for OS support within 5 months of its release? I'm not defending Avid here. It just seems like your choice was, given everything that is known about Avid in the last 10 years, and everything users experienced with previous Apple systems during hardware transitions, always going to be a huge gamble and incredibly risky.

Precisely why I made the least investment I could at this stage.

The M1 Mac Mini will do everything I need it to at the moment, and although I cannot open PT Ultimate sessions in my previous PT HD system, worst case I have found a workaround should I have to go back until things get sorted.

The little Mini will fetch a fair dollar should I want to upgrade to a Max Studio when things get caught up. It paid for itself with the first series mixed last month.

My advice after 20+ years in the Apple/Avid ecosystem, approach with a plan and with caution. Just my two cents.

Hi there

Just got off the phone with Waves. The explanation that received seems logical. Clarity Vx and many other plugins like Abbey Roads Mastering plugs among others are simply processor pigs. They are doing a ton of complex computing in the background. For the 29.95$ USD I think I will purchase it. It does do a fantastic job for de-noising dialogue.

This is how I would approach it if I needed multiple instances of it. As that would cause a running out of resources, I would Save As and use Clarity as an Audio Suite plugin and render each track. Basically creating a de-noises stem. If I was at any point unhappy with the final results, I could just re-import the raw tracks from the initial session and work around with WNS or whatever other noise reduction software I have on hand.

Hope this makes sense and in some way help.

Peace.

So, do we have some type of ETA on when Pro Tools 2022 is coming?

I bought a Macbook Pro M1 Pro and even though everything in Pro Tools 2012.12 is running smooth and better on this machine than my old Mac Pro, I know there are plugins I have that are taking advantage of the M1 chip and should be running a whole lot leaner/better.

When did the last 2021 update hit last year?

Marc

Last was 2021.12. History tells us that there would normally have been a March 2022.3 release. With the world as it is now, who knows…

Avid generally never gives ETA for releases. Beta testers may know, but they wont tell. Mods usually only find out a day or two in advance even.

This is correct. You cannot (officially) roll back past the factory shipped OS. However, experiments with booting off an external drive or partition with BigSur imaged have been successful. This is not recommended, for obvious reasons, for professional workloads.

Considering that new Pro Tools releases are just as likely to break something I need as give me something new that I wished for, I'm not so eager to see a new release as I once was. I miss the tried and true development cycle of one feature-rich upgrade followed by a number of bug-fix updates.

I find that Avid provides roughly one release per year that provides an acceptable balance between stability and new features, and that's the norm when development hasn't been disrupted by war. If they can do that at some point this year, I'll take it.

Best,

Geoff

This is incorrect. The newest M1|Pro and M1|Max laptops need macOS 12.0 or above. They will not boot Big Sur in any manner. The drivers for the hardware are not there. The Mac Studio will be the same.

If you have an M1 computer that was originally released before macOS 12 came out, it can be downgraded to Big Sur, even if it ships today with Monterey since the hardware was designed to work with Big Sur.

This is the way it has always been with Apple hardware released with a new OS.

That would have only have been the case for the Mac mini's that were still in the product line when the 2021 line came out, which was shipping with Monterey then.

However, because they were originally released with Big Sur making them with the ability to roll back.

You will not be able to boot off of an external drive with Big Sur on the 2021 line of Macs.
It will say OS version not compatible.
