The problem is that emulators often cost several times the original processing power. I don't think it would be very efficient, unless maybe it was TDM to AAX-Native.

You kind of answered your own question, a wrapper like FXExpansion is just mapping function calls between different plugin environments, while that is impressive itself, the underlying code is all for one binary platform, e.g. x86. in the case of HD/DSP vs. HDX/DSP you are dealing with two radically different DSP architectures. Emulating a Motorola 56k (fixed point) DSP in software on a TI TMS320 (floating point) DSP is not going to be pretty.

What I'm really waiting for is AAX format virtual instruments. It remains to be seen whether or not AAX will fix PT's virtual instrument problems. Frankly if AAX is not any better than RTAS is when it comes to handling VI's it won't matter that PT11 is 64bit. Being 64bit only helps when you're dealing with large sample libraries. But Pro Tools will freak out right now with instruments that hardly use any ram at all. The biggest ram hogs I use a lot are Omnisphere and Kontakt but they both have external ram servers that can be used.

Why not use this newly created forum to come in and be real. Instead of blowing off legitimate concern from your customers.

ZERO information on Virtual instruments other than no AAX which is big concern.

AVID does not even lead by example by insuring their on line of plugins are AAX.

Don't get upset with other companies not jumping on the AAX bandwagon. How can you blame them when AVID is dragging their own heals.

Well I mostly use EW/QL Play VIs and VSL VIs and both of them will support AAX. That has been made known. I presume that they are in no hurry as RTAS will work in PT10 so until PT11 comes out there is no imminent need to hurry.

Hi everyone,

We appreciate that some may be feeling uncertainty and we value your feedback. This sub-forum and the AAX plug-ins list were not created as a signal that the work is complete, but as a way to get you the info you need around AAX—there's a lot work still to be done. That being said, Avid and the developer community understand the importance of getting the portfolio of plug-ins ported to AAX and they are coming! Over the next couple weeks alone, there are some very exciting announcements coming and we'll continue to share them here.

Please keep the discussion going!

Do you know anything about the Air group porting their virtual instruments to AAX?

I obviously can't speak into where things stand now since the AIR team are owned by inMusic, however it was my understanding that before the sale that AIR were porting to AAX, I have no reason to see why that would change, but as I say nothing is confirmed until announced.

Will the old standby of running a fossilized machine via MIDI with VIs in whatever format still work? Just asking, without starting a gunfight.
