Default PreSonus Tube Preamplifier Help

Not sure if this is in the right section, couldnt find the sub forum.

I recently bought the Presonus Tube Preamplifier, seen here:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRSSTUDIOCHANNEL

And I'm not sure how to get the right settings for the type of music I do and a bit lost. I do hip hop/Rap music with Singers included on Hooks every now and then and just looking for a standard good Medium/warm sound. Can anyone help me achieve this? Dont wanna start recording till I get it down right. Thanks in advance!

Big,

Play with it till you like what you hear........

I think most rap vocals are pretty compressed so quick attack and release ratio 6.1 but mainly flavor to what you like to hear......

If it sounds good to you....do it.

Then demo it across some verses to hear how it sounds in the mix.

Don't forget to scoop your main mix to help your vocals sit right and tight.

Register for like 15 bucks and get tons of free samples and hits and loops and videos to help you do what you do.......

YYR,

yes, I deff plan on doing that.

But, I would like to get at least a standard setting going first so I'm somewhat CLOSE to where I should be at, then adjust from there to the way I like the sound.

So any help is much appreciated.

Here's my suggestion. Start with the compressor and EQ bypassed. Set the GAIN for proper signal level on your audio track(which is just into the yellow). Now add the compressor. Set ratio to 2:1 and go easy at first(you can always add compression with plugins, but you can't remove it if its over done). Set threshold so you hit 4-5db of reduction on the peaks. Adjust the compressor output to make up any level lost by the GR(IOW, get the recording level back to just into the yellow). As you get the feel of how the compressor works, you may want to try upping the ratio to 3:1 or 4:1, but I wouldn't go past there unless you are looking for obvious "squash". As for the EQ, I would not track with any EQ other than a hi-pass at around 125Hz(give or take depending on the range of the singer). Adding EQ with plugins works great, is easy and doesn't commit you to something that might be a mistake when it comes time to mix.

Thanks

On compressor output you mean the gain right? How does that work? I know you gotta make up for whatever you reduce.

Also you said 125 Hz on the Hi pass?
It only has ranges from 2k to 20k. Assuming you're talking Freq level?

Yea, it has the 80hz button.

What does that exactly do?

From the Presonus Studio Channel manual:

Quote:
The 80Hz button is a low-end roll-off filter. When pushed in, the 80Hz button causes all
frequencies below 80Hz to be attenuated (dropped) by 12dB. This filter can be handy in live and studio
applications. For example, the 80Hz filter can help to reduce the “boominess” or “muddiness” of a vocal and
improve the overall clarity.
