Default Purchasing new 003, newb questions

Hello guys and gals.

My partner has a monster Mac coming in the mail and is probably going to purchase the latest 003. I'm reading the specs and am confused.

1st Question:
I assumed that I could only record 8 channels at once simply because the 003 has 8 preamps (or line ins). But in the specs it says "18 simultaneous channels of audio I/O".

Is there a way, maybe with the appropriate gear, to record more than 8 channels at once?

2nd Question:

Pro Tools allow "48 simultaneous stereo audio tracks (expandable with Toolkit options)"... could this translate into 96 mono tracks? Or does this mean I get 48 tracks that can be stereo or mono?

1:

8 ch built in
8 ch via ADAT with an external A/D converter
2 ch via SPDIF witf external A/D converter

2:

48 tracks total, can be either Stereo or Mono, not 96 mono

Thank you Flommer!

Is there a way to slave an extra 003 into the senario so I could have 16 mic pres (or in/outs)?

I don't think the 003 has a stand-alone mode, but I could be wrong. Hopefully someone will confirm or deny...

Just so you understand what I mean, you can not connect both to the computer at the same time. The 002 has a stand alone mixer mode, which would allow it to act as an external A/D converter (with 4 mis pres and 4 line inputs) and use it's ADAT output

You don't need PT installed but need at least the Digi Core Audio Drivers installed on some Digi qualified MAC systems.
