Default System usage meter jumps

Is this suppose to happen? It this a sign that I need more ram? I'm only running 512 at the moment. Thanks.

An effective way to determine if you need more RAM is to use Activity Monitor. It can tell you memory usage and page-in/page-out stats globally and for individual processes, and a whole lot more.
