Default New guy question on Delay Compensation

Hi Guys,
I'm a logic user who needs to add a PT setup to my rig.

I'm wondering how the heck you guys deal with no plug delay compensation.

it seems like a major hassle but, I have no experience so I am asking.
How much of an issue will this be for me. I use a LOT of plugins and VI's.

thanks in advance

best-
PMcC

You can get a plugin solution from Mellowmuse, but it's hardly automatic compared the the Logic way.
This would be the primary reason I don't use PT for anything too big. Also the fact that you can't run nearly as many plugs.

If you choose your plugins wisely, you can ignore the hassle. There are plenty of good plugins with zero or near-zero latency. Other tricks include processing audio with AudioSuite(which renders a new file in place of the old file) or bounce a processed track that has lots of latency, to a new track and use the original track as a guide to align the new processed version(using Tab to Transient can place the new audio exactly on the money). I've been mixing in Pro Tools for 4 years now and really never give it a thought, now that I know which plugins to leave to mastering(like all "look ahead" compressors and limiters). If you have a few plugins that you just gotta use and cause latency, once you learn how much, its not hard to nudge by the correct amount(if you duplicate the playlist first, you will always be able to revert easily).

thanks,
I know absolutley ziltch about PT. In fact, oddly enough, it's the only DAW I'm not fluent at. But, I think there's no way I'd be able to deal with the lack of delay comp.
I was hoping someone would tell me Digi has a quick ping, that tells you the exact nudge amount.
I can't imagine having the deal with it given the amount of plugs and VI's I use.

thanks for the input.

I have been workin on PTLE for yrs now & although I want it b/c I just want it, ADC has neva been an issue for me & I mix quite extensively but the plugs I use, not b/c they don't have latency, but b/c I like them & they just so happen not to have latency works out great & even when using inserts, on certain things with the exception of indivdual drum tracks, I don't have an issue...

As for VI's, the most u get from them is 10samples of latency usually...

I tried calling Digi to get info but they just auto direct you to the web, the peeps at gtr center are clueless.

so,.tell me. Is there at least a little button on each track you tick and it tells you how much it needs to be moved?

I can imagine things like Kontakt, BFD, RMX and Omnisphere would create tons of latency.

Please excuse my ignorance, how in the world do you find the magic setting for each track?

maybe there's a link that explains the process?

thanks for your patience.

where u'd see the numeric volume in the mix &/or edit window, U would (I think, I'm tryna think backwards as I'm on PC) APPLE + click on that & it changes thru volume, peaks & latency...

Thanks again, I appreciate the help
so. Because I'm totally in the dark clueless

I'll take it slow again, and ask a few

vi's, aux (effect sends) tracks and audio tracks all have a
tick button that tells you the amount of delay
and you then can nudge the midi or audio track
to line up?

They would then only Change when you
change the buffer?

What about external midi instruments
I'm afraid to ask
thanks again

Yeah all the tracks have that where u change flip thru & see it... if u can keep ur computer set to @ least/most 128 buffer u will be good but of course like any DAW pretty much, bigger the Buffer the looser it will get when ur tracking @ least...

As Key said, apple+click on mac, ctrl+cick on win in the numeric window of each track will cycle the value through gain, peak, and latency.

However.. I wouldn't rely 100% on what it reports.. I've heard it can be off.
