Default Video Cards

just a curiousity question.

i'm using an old 3Dfx Voodoo3 2000 16MB PCI video card in my PT machine. it works fine, and i certainly don't want a power hungry video card in there sucking precious resources. but would a more up to date video card give me significantly smoother scrolling? Presently i don't really have any issue with how my scrolling looks, but then again, i've used this video card in my Pro Tools machine since day 1. So i don't know any better. What do you all think?

Sure I would try out a new card. You can always go back to the current one. Making an image of your system would be a good idea before making such a change.

Wow, Voodoo3! That's 20th century tech, baby!! Well, 16 MB meets the minimum requirements for 6.4, but my guess would be that a slightly more modern card would improve performance a bit. Even $50 could get you a nice upgrade, probably a solid 128 or 256 MB card at Newegg.com or somewhere (I sound like I work for them with all the recommendations I give, but I like them). Do you need a pci or avg card, or can you do pci-e? Are you running XP?

Edit: Just saw your other post. Asus A8N? XP pro sp2? Yes, get a new card! A nice pci-e x16 card for your shiny new computer! You'll have new driver updates and everything!

Wish I had a better PCI or PCIe card sitting around to try it out.

I have an Nvidia 5700Ultra in another PC, but it's AGP, no AGP on my new board. I do see on Newegg though they have a lot of cheap PCIe16 cards. Can anyone recommend any of those "under $50" ones?

Stay away from the ones that say something like "512MB (128MB on board)" or "turbocache", they take the balance from your system RAM. Beyond that, read the reviews and beware any that comment on the fan being too loud, since it's for a DAW. Maybe go fanless, just be sure you have good ventilation.
