Default Re: Kernel Panic with Mbox2 USB

Looks like the issue is "hot-plugging" the device... but I just wanted to add that includes putting the laptop to sleep, or just closing the screen when you're in a hurry or whatever. I usually don't turn my computer off at night, I just use sleep mode, and I'll still get kernel panics (usually when going into/coming out of sleep, but sometimes it will be totally random).

Macbook Pro
2.8ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram
OSX 10.6.2 (snow leopard)
Mbox2 Mini rev. M (I use this as the system soundcard, so I hear everything thru my monitors)
Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 (just updated!)

Bummer that this happens... Macs are supposed to "just work" right?? haha

Default Re: Kernel Panic with MboxMicro USB

Hi there,
here to report the same issue:
Unplugging MBoxMicro makes my 10.6.2 system crash within 10-20 mints. No assignments to MBox on the
Audio/Midi Setup.
This was present even when using PTools 8 on OS X 10.5 and continued after upgrading to PT8.03 with 10.6.2.

Next thing I'm going try is to force quit Mbox2CS on the ActivityMonitorApp.
But I'm not optimistic about it due to the 'mysterious' 10-20mints lapse discon-crash.

I'm also disappointed that Digidesign didn't warn us about the connectivity issues on the MBox.
This might be might be one their biggest blunders ever.

These are just few loose thoughts.
I hope it helps!
.

hi again,

good news: first quit process mbox2cs on activity monitor then unplug the mboxMicro then no crash !!!

next I'll check the same with different variations.

If this works, then next reasonable step could be to create an automator routine that performs this easy step with a single click from our desktop.

Curious to know if any users have the same luck!

This is very interesting! I will try this with my mbox mini after my inevitable kernel panic when I restart, after my TM backup has finished and report back! I'm fairly positive that by trawling console logs we can get to a more acceptable workaround that "don't hot plug!"

First Time Pro Tools user here.

Kernel Panic upon shut down here as well. I tried all of the above, here is what Im using:
15" Macbook Pro 2.8GHz Intel 4GBRam
Snow Leopard
MBox2, Pro Tools LE 8.0.3

I installed 8.0, then installed CS updates 8.0.1, then installed 8.0.3
Plug in MBOX2, then start computer, then open protools, work on session, save, close, close any other app. Shut down, MBOX2 still connected, then panic mode as I try to shut down.

Same happens if I do all of above and Quit CS2 in Activity Monitor, tried both MBOX2 connected and disconnected, then Shut Done, still get Panic mode either way. This is really aggravating.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks again and God Bless.

Hidalgo

Here's another thread, concerning the Mbox2 Micro specifically:

Really a bummer; especially for a device marketed by Digi for Laptop use.

Here is what I had to do with my MBOX2 plugged in before shutting down:

1. Open Activity monitor
2. Select All Processes so you can see the following
- DigiDesignFireWireHelper
- Mbox2CS
3. Click on each of the above and quit them.

Then upon shut down the computer the computer will not go into panic mode. That was my experience at least.
Heres whats sucks - you have to do this upon each shutdown, whether or not the MBox2 is plugged in or not, other wise the system will panic upon shutdown.

Hope this helps!
