Perhaps you should try a phone call to energyXT product information to find out the answer to that question. They would be more informed about the rendering engine of that software than the Digidesign Users Conference.
I'm inclined to think it's just adding a bunch of zeroes at the end of each word...but then why offer the option of rendering to 24 bit when working in 16 unless it actually uses a different dae during rendering... It could be that it's actually doing everything in 32bit float internally, in which case the rendering to 24 bit would be the better choice. Why don't you compose in 24 bit to begin with using eXT and call it a day...as stated before. There's no rule saying softsynths can't spit out a full 24 bit dynamic range. Why not use it while composing?

Well, the reason I don't use 24bit while composing is because I'm having a hard enough time getting all my tracks in 16 due to bad cpu performance of my computer.
