Default Please i need help fast.. DIGI 002r

Hi everybody....

I finally have the money to go and buy me a DIGI 002r and i was going to do it tomorrow. But i just thought about something.

What΄s up with the latency???? Is it better or worse then the Digi 001 ????

It΄s just a feeling but it seams to me that a firewire is not as good as a PCI card???

Please let me know... fast.... i have work to do this weekend

YOU ROCK

The 002/R has Low Latency Mode.. and has a lower buffer setting than the 001 (64 samples) if your computer is fast enough to support it.

The 002/R requires OS X.

I do have a similar setup: 867 MHz G4 Single Processor, 640 Megs RAM. I know you have dual processors, but PT only uses one processor (all of it, if you set it that way). Anyways, I haven't had trouble monitoring with it, or the 001 I used to have. I think what you pay for is the A/D converters and the four mic pres. I think the sound is clearer overall with the 002r. But your computer is about the most powerful you can get, except for G5, so I think you'll be okay.

Btw, I can't tell any difference btw 48 kHz and 96 kHz in my bedroom, maybe a real pro might be able to tell, in a pro studio. So my advice is not to buy it for the "wow! 96/24 !!" factor. I'd suggest researching the A/D converters, but it's generally agreed that the 002r mic pres are a good deal better than the 2 001 mic pres.

Pro Tools 6.x can use the second processor.

My guess is that you have enough horsepower w/ that computer. I have a DP 867 w/ 1.0 GB ram, and it's plenty fast. I'm not running the 002R, however. Hopefully someone will be along soon w/ your exact computer and the 002R.

wow. I din΄t know that my computer was that good :-P

I bought it some time ago to do design and video. but with time i started to get more into Recording music. Naja anyway.

I am not geting the 002r cuz of the 96/24 thing. when i record i will record in 48/24. I think that is enoughe.

But like i said my main conserne is the latency. Is the firewire good enoughe to beat the PCI card from the 001 ???

Oh, and while i am at it. would i be able to record and mix (with plugins. just normal ones like EQ, Comp) at least 8 tracks with one of the new iBooks. The 933Mhz G4 with 650Mb RAM ???

Thank you soo much, you ROCK

I'm running 002r on both a 17" Powerbook and DP867, (Powerbook easily getting 24 tracks with FW800 Drive). Able to do some fairly comprehensive mixes with good plug-in counts. ibook G4 should do way more than 8 tracks with plugs.

Low latency mode is perfectly acceptable BUT only works on tracks assigned to outputs 1 and 2 - so it's not possible to use the machine as a straight tape machine replacement with a console, having 16 low latency inputs/outputs. If you are working in the box setting your monitor mix out of 1&2 you should be fine. Also, any aux sends to (for example) a reverb from tracks record enabled and assigned to outs 1&2 will be disabled whilst in record.

Hope this answers your question

Mike

consider 44.1/24 if you plan on making a cd of the recording. latency is nothing you should worry about - i have had success with a 667mhz powerbook, and your mac has plenty more horsepower.

most likely yes. i have no knowledge about the G4-ibooks' real-world performance, but this 667mhz powerbook of mine (7200rpm hard disk & 1gig ram) has no trouble with that kind of load.

i haven't tried the absolute maxx yet, but i regularily record while making live sound and monitoring all at the same time and all from the single powerbook. one waves renaissance reverb and several other waves plugs, and usually 12 ins & 4 outs simultaneously in use. cpu-meter hits about 75% at this time, and if i need the full 16 ins, i first switch to outboard reverb.

oh, and i need to sustain recording for hours so this is not any "i can do this for a minute" -setup.
