Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
I bought an SE/30 Sound Accelerator the week they came out and a DAT i/O with a serial number in the low 100s. I paid $1200 to some guy at a BMUG meeting for a CDC 650 megabyte drive. Last time I fired that rig up seven years ago it all still worked! Seva told me I may have bought the only copy of Waves Q6. I sent him back the package and floppy disks for their museum around ten years ago.
Paul deBenedictus of Opcode bought the other SE/30! There actually was somebody else I ran into online but I can't remember his name. I bought a Pro I/O analog interface also. One of the first digital editing jobs I ever did was assembling a hip hop album that used samples from an album I had recorded at Motown twenty years earlier! Life can be amazing!

Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
My first ProTools system was Sound Tools II on Mac IICI with Studio Vision Pro to get 4 tracks. Was very exciting moving to Computer from editing and using a splicing block on a 2 Track Tascam 32. My first 3 plugins were Waves Q10 and L1 and Time Bandit from Steinberg

Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
You guys should distinguish between Sound Designer and Sound Tools. SD was for editing samples to send to and from Samplers. Sound Tools was the predecessor to Pro Tools. It was 2 channels, and frankly, a lot like Peak.
I used Sound Tools on a Mac SE30 with a DAT I/O at school and soon thereafter bought a Mac Quadra 800 and used Sound Tools and Deck. with a Pro Tools 442 hardware interface. |

Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
On January 20, 1989, Digidesign founders Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher unveiled Sound Tools, a Mac-based (SE or Mac II) 2-track digital recording/editing system. Offering outboard converters, Sound Designer II software and a $3,995 price tag, Sound Tools was ideal for editing DAT tracks, and its SD II file format became a worldwide standard for digital file exchange.

Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
On a related note, I still have a couple of Digidrums chips for my Oberheim drum machine. They precede every other Digi product discussed here so far. Gonna eBay them one day....

Re: What was the first computer Pro Tools (Sound Tools) run on.
Macintosh SE/30 16 MHz January 1989 68030 Processor
Macintosh II 16 MHz March 1987 68020 Processor I always thought the Soundtools Nubus came out before the SE/30 card. AFIK the Se did not have and expansion slot but the SE/30 did. The Mac II was the first expandable Mac it had Nubus slots. |
