Music XPC or Rain Recording?
I'm finally getting around to getting a new laptop PC and have been looking at some of these new "audio" laptops like the ones "MusicXPC" offers - They actually explain the reason for not to getting it PT certified and also how they've tested it at great lengths to find that it works flawlessly with PT - The bio of the laptop designer is impressive:
http://www.musicxpc.com/ Here's another audio laptop maker "RainRecording".....I didn't see much about Pro Tools on this one, but they have some laptops with much more memory capability (2 gb versus 4gb) http://www.rainrecording.com/ --------------------------------- The bottom line is that I want to be capable of video editing work in PTLE(and also no freezing during basic audio functions!) so I'm not sure which way to go, they are also expensive! - I'm an experienced tech and could build a perfect desktop from scratch but not sure how do-able a homemade laptop would be. Let me know of any better resources...like a good do-it-yourself laptop schematic (a less expensive route!) Cheers Ben www.benlongmusic.com

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
Seriously, for that price, the Macbook Pro is a better option. Not only can you run Pro Tools under the mac OS, but you can install Windows on it as well. (keep in mind that purchasing windows to run on it adds to the price a little). It really is the most versatile and logical choice for the price.
Even if you wanted to go cheaper, the regular Macbook would be a better choice. Value-per-dollar, the Macbooks have it.

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
Can't do it, I've been working heavily with PCs for about 12 years now and know them inside and out. I know everyone is on Macs, but it will never happen with me

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
Like I said, though, you can install XP. It really is the same exact thing.

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
Actually, it's not - If it breaks I can't open it and work on it myself! I'm just not a fan of Macs proprietary stranglehold.

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
Unlike a desktop, there's very little you can repair, interchange, or replace in a laptop. What can be is not foreign from a hardware standpoint if you're repair savy.
I'm with Shawn on this one... and I'm a PC tech. This is about "tools" not blind allegiance. If I were in your price range and looking for a solid Pro Tools laptop, given the current choices, it would be a Macbook. |

Re: Music XPC or Rain Recording?
nope, it's just a familiarity thing for me. Any learning curves, however small, get in the way big time for me productivity wise now that I'm actually getting work. I've been a PC tech for 12 years and know them to work fine. Mac is probably better and certainly cooler, but all systems must crash eventually. Hey, isn't this the Windows section?

The only learning curve there is how to install Windows. Once windows is up and running on the mac hardware, it is exactly the same as running on "Windows based" hardware. The only thing missing is the BIOS, which is technically obsolete anyway. Finding a "Windows based" laptop that is guaranteed to work with Pro Tools really is hit and miss.

You want to feel some pain go read the Windows Best Laptops thread. The MacBook gives you the option of Windows or OSX and the hardware is supported because the MacBooks are supported.
