Default Is Mellowmuse really worth it ?

I know there has been other threads about this but none that recently so I was wondering if the folks who own this could throw in their two cents now that they had a few months to cozy up to it. Is it worth the loss of 2 inserts ? Is it that dramatic / time saver compared to nudging ?

You only lose 1 insert per channel.

I vote for it. I've been using it since before it was an RTAS plugin. Since I have 3 UAD cards, it's easier to use than manually compensating, but I do look forward to the day when I won't have to use it at all.

My problem with nudging is that I never seemed to be able to keep track of all the nudging going on and things always managed to get out of sync. More than once I had to ditch all the work I'd done and start over to get things right again. Documenting the nudges and buffer in the track comments was too much hassle for me.

btw Mellowmuse makes several plugins, not just ATA

Don't think many use them though

One more vote for ATA or ummm Mellowmuse!

For me it's a workaround to the limitation of protools lack of adc and although it takes a little time to adapt to the workflow it does allow you to experiment with a variety of plugins on any given track while keeping things phase coherent, and if I were to have to nudge tracks every time i wanted to add or swap a plugin I would:

1) end up with a jumbled mess
or
2) just use plugs with minimal or no latency
or
3) copy identical plugs to every track and bypass the ones that i didnt need
or
4) just mix without regard to compensation unless something really sounded out of whack.

I guess the bottom line for me is that ATA is easier for me to deal with than nudging or sitting there with a calculator and using time adjuster plugins, but as always ymmv. Hope that helps...

Watch these videos:

http://www.screencast.com/users/peed...ders/tutorials

MM prevents you from having to do all of that. Then you have to decide if the time saved is worth the money spent

Note that if you are not already using mellomuse, you should not be nudging things..

What happens if you decide to start a mix all over again but using different plugins/busses/auxes etc... Now all your base audio tracks are completely whacked..

Also I'm not sure if MM takes care of all circumstances.. Does it? It uses a ping so I guess plugins that incorrectly report latency aren't a problem.. Or hardware insert?

I think it is worth having, because it almost automatically do things for us. Though if someone is experienced in doing it all manually and happy with it, don't buy it.
But for the majority, I think it is a good solution.

I recently bought it, tried it on one session and was not extremely impressed. It kind of gets to be a headache keeping track of all the levels of latency going on and it eats your busses up.

I think I ended up keeping it only on the drums to even out the parallel compression bus, which was nice to have, but not that much easier than copying and bypassing inserts.

Maybe I'll warm up to it though.
