Default New Mac Pro Intel vs Old Mac Pro PPC

Hi,

today I saw this announcement from Apple:

http://www.apple.com/benl/macpro/

Since I am still using PT7 on a Mac pro PPC, I think now it's the time to upgrade in August to an Intel based MAC Pro for my PT HD2 and move to PT8.

Just wondering if this Mac will be out of the box compatible with PT8, using regular HDD (not the SSD). Do we really need 12 cores for an HD system? I guess not.
Or do I have to wait until Avid approves this new Mac and has verified compatibility with PT8 HD?

Thanks,
Dirk

If you don't think you need all that processing try to get the current generation Macpro. They are definitely compatible.

The thing you need to look at is whether your cards are PCI-x or PCI-e, and then whether you do a crossgrade or buy a chassis.

My cards are PCI-e. Maybe not such a bad idea to get the current Mac Pro, since I probably don't need all the CPU processing power. Just wondering what could be the biggest benefit than compared to the latest Mac Pro?

I think it's evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Also the current generation will be more attractive in price now that the new ones have been announced.

Biggest benefit would merely be a slight speed bump and more processing. That may be very important to some users, not so much to others.

Hey guys, the hardware exchange stuff doesn't seem to be anywhere on the Digi site, but Sweetwater.com still has all of them listed as available, with prices, etc. You may want to give them a call. Maybe it's not officially being promoted, but still available, or something like that.

It would be nice if Avid/Digidesign could chime in or is there nobody available?

And if Avid would chime in, can you also send us a link on your website where the detailed certified MAC models are?

I can only find two links but without detailed hardware specs:

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=352429

and

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=349739

I will keep a close eye on that page because I'm looking forward when Avid certifies the new Mac Pro with the Intel Xeon E5620 Westmere processor

Thanks!
