But Mike, Strictly is one of the best sounding things on TV at the mo and it is mixed drama style. It also sounds great in stereo. As does "Later". They are most certainly not drama. And please stop lumping me into the features / cinema brigade. One of the stated reasons for the DPP proposals is to supposedly compensate for incorrect "installations". The entirely correct point made by the people opposed to them is that on a one box 5.1 £300 system bought from the high street, if the user has their speakers stacked in a pyramid where they look good or sit in with the rest of the furniture, then it won't matter how it is mixed, it will still sound wrong. When the US are not diverging their 5.1 mixes it just leads to inconsistency and also much more work for facilities who have to deliver to co-pros. This is not just in drama or features but across the whole range of genres. You're out of touch with my CV - I do all nowadays, and strive to maintain consistency. Even US studio based sitcoms are mixed in 5.1 without divergence.

But getting back to the original point, if Auro have delivered a way of unwrapping that preserves the positioning of the original components across ALL the speakers, I'll be very interested.

That's why I like the UPM-1
I have done some movies with music performances, and it always keeps the bass, kicks and snares centered, where they belong. Same with lead vocals. Everything is anchored where it belongs.

Sons of anarchy uses songs for lots of montage segments at the end of the show, and I get stereo stems. And I definitely like the way it spreads thins around, yet anchors the stuff in the center, that needs to be there.
I even redid the opening and closing title music when I took over the show this year.
And it sounds much better.

But I'm anxious to check out the Auro

And I agree with 8db. Divergence for dialog is awefull, and sounds weird and just wrong.

Absolutely agree. Because in TV our sound image is much wider than the picture, unlike film where the sound image is the same width as the picture, it is crucial in TV that all dialog is anchored to the centre channel. This way when Granny is sat over to one side in the corner all the dialog still comes from the tellie. If divergence is used on the dialog then because a granny is close to the right hand speaker she will hear all the dialog from there.

The UPM1 adds a bit of short reverb that doesn't sit well with my ears. What Auro adds is much more pleasing and adjustable.

If I were going to upmix full mixes and had stems to work with I would use Auro on the music and the ever so flaky RTAS only version 1.0 of the DTS Neural Upmix Plugin on dialog and effects.

UPM has responded to me regarding AAX.
They state they are redesigning the plug, and will have AAX by Q1 2014.

OOH, Auromatic still refuses to respond to my email enquiries.
I'm busy working 80 hours a week myself, but still answer the phone, and respond to emails!!

TC Electronic, has also stayed quiet.
