Cool Does the Ilok key need to be plugged in at all times?

OK, i'm new with protools and it seems that i cannot run protools without the key plugged-in "AT ALL TIMES".

Once i remove it, it says the key is missing and to re-insert it to save before PT quits.
Seems like a huge waste of a port. I'm already using a usb expander and all my ports are full and needing to have this key inserted "ALL THE TIME" seems absolutely unnecessary.

>>> Shouldn't you be able to authorize this program to run and then not need the key???

In reality, if it worked this way, a facility with multiple pro tools rooms could start each program on one license rendering the point of the iLok useless.

You are answering your own question, and Pro Tools is telling you exactly what is needed.

Yes the iLok needs to be installed while you use Pro Tools. Would kind of defeat the purpose of a authorization lock if you could remove it and use it to start Pro Tools on a computer while Pro Tools is already running on another.

That makes sense considering those circumstances.
Guess it's time to find a bigger USB expander.

Thanks Kindly Guys!

AFAIK, older PT versions allowed removing iLok after everything has been startrd. PT9 changed this, as I remember. I might be wrong, though, I'm relying on my accusedly bad memory here...

Maybe you need to drop some of the stuff on that USB hub. Should only be 3 things - keyboard, mouse, iLok.

You are correct. It used to be that way.

... and an eLicenser plugged in all the time too for Steinberg products ... I have 2 USB ports lost for piracy's purpose.

Would be nice if these guys developed a dongle that had a USB port on the butt end of it ... Kind of like the plugs on Christmas lights so you can plug in several strings to one outlet ...

You think a dongle sticks out far now?
But I like the idea though
