Default kvm extenders

Does anyone know of a high quality Keyboard mouse and VGA extender system that works well with the G4 USB??? (I'm looking for a solution less expensive than another networked CPU that works up to 250' or more)

Thanks

At a 250 foot distance you'll need a device like the Gefen.com Cat5 extenders. You'll find they're not inexpensive..

I've got an ADB 100 that extends the keyboard and mouse (but not the monitor) from the CPU,
but it's not USB.

Maybe you could get a serial card...

let me know if you're interested, I'll charge you a lot less than the factory.

Thanks, I'll check out the Gefen, and maybe look around for some other alternatives as well.

If you don't mind using an older keyboard and mouse, you could just get an ADB to USB adapter and put some 4pin DIN ends on a 250' piece of CAT-5. For the monitor, use high-quality RGBHV 75ohm coax and you can run very long distances with minimal loss. The only problem is that the monitor cable won't be cheap, but it'd still be less than a Gefen. I've built my own cables for this purpose with great results in the past. In terms of ease of use and minimal wiring time, the Gefen CAT-5 boxes are the way to go though.

I use the Gefen CAT5*3000R. It works great!
I went to there factory and was able to pick it up for $995.00. My control room is quite once again.

You might try NTI at www.networktechinc.com - they make extension cables and KVM boxes for all platforms, and are very reasonably priced. I'm using their 50' VGA cable on a G4 (no booster) and it's perfect.

Brian

Someone turned me on to NTI as well, but I can't figure out what to do about USB. There's no going back to ADB for me. How long can it go? do you need a repeater cable?

I'm not sure about length restrictions for USB drives, but a couple places around here are running 30' - 40' USBs for their Keyboard/mouse with no trouble.

The NTI sales guy said their USB extensions have a built-in repeater, so you can daisy-chain 'em and go waaaayy past spec length. Please post in this thread if you contact them & find out something more specific. (I'm still running 50' ADB w/iMate adapter to G4; haven't gotten used to new mini-keyboards yet.)

Warmest Regards,
Brian

Hi,

In this context, does anyone know when USB 2.0 will
be useful for Midi and stuff?
the gefen USB extender only does USB 1.0 or 1.1
and as many people appear to have problems with USB
for Midi....well any info is appreciated.
Sorry if this is a litttle OT in the thread.

regards
Janne A.
