Default What\'s the best-sounding recording done on a 002??

I'm going through that "maybe I should get better converters for my 002R system" phase again.

Just to put some perspective on things, has anyone got any material that they (or others) have recorded through the stock 002 converters (alternative pres + additional outboard are OK) that really shows what the 002 system is capable of? Perhaps then I can put my mind at ease about the converters and instead shell out for better "front-end" outboard gear.

If you can advise what additional outboard gear was used in the recording/mixing of each piece then I'd be clearer as to the bigger picture.

Thanks people!

Sorry, but I'm still on a 001 here. I've read that some artists have done portions of their CD's on 002's/Mbox's. I'm pretty sure Scott from Velvet Revolver used an LE system to record his vocals for Contraband (b/c he was in "house arrest" at the time). I've also read that John Mayer sports two 002's, Live uses some sort of LE interface on the road (then dumps to HD later), and several other artists (I read a lot) but I can't provide a list.

Have you read the latest *Tape Op? Well, Cake used a 001 and an old Mac G3 to record and mix their last album with bare minimum gear and plug-ins (mostly DigiRack). I listened to some samples online and was pretty surprised. It sounded better than most of my 001 recordings.

*EDIT - It may have been Electronic Musician now that I think about it. I get several subscriptions and it's hard to keep track: EQ, EM, DigiZine, Tape Op, and Pro Audio Review. I'll check when I get home.

Thanks Rev. Is this the Cake CD with "I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket" and several other catchy little ditties??? If it is then, OK, you can get fantastic results with a 001 system. Wonder if they used a [bleep]-load of expensive analogue gear at the front end???

Hey Tubthumper,

You're pointed in the right direction ... you just need to jump in the deep end of the pool and start swimming!!!!

People have been making HIT records LOOOOOOONG before Pro Tools was ever invented.

Man .. it's a GREAT time to be alive

Good luck,
Russ

Well there you go. API is definitely one of my favs. I'd put a Cranesong Hedd 192 A/D in that pre chain also. You can definitely get pro quality sound with a 001 or 002 and for alot less than the HD.

Speaking of TapeOp (i'm going a little off topic here but it wouldn't be the first time a thread on this site was slightly de-railed), I was really surprised to see that one of the major engineers. (not remembering his name right now and I don't have the magazine in front of me) was using Tannoy Reveal Monitors in his setup. It's the article where it shows his house and and talks about how he likes to pick up average/normal user end equipment for his studio. It's nice to see that someone else is using those monitors in a very pro setting...

Thanks for your advice people.

I shelled out for some reasonable front-end gear when I picked up the 002:

AKG C3000B: large diaphram condensor
RODE NT5s: matched pair small diaphram condensors
SHURE Beta 58
SHURE SM57
AUDIX D6: still to come

TL AUDIO Ivory 5001: 4-channel valve pre-amp
DBX 266XL: stereo/dual mono compressor/gate

Behringer 2030A: active monitors

So, if I'm getting the drift correctly: my mics are probably not going to let me down (I record mainly indie pop/rock with acoustic drums, acoustic + electric guitars, electric bass, percussion, vocals). The mic pre unit should be adequate. Ditto the dbx compressor. The monitors - possibly the weak point - and therefore maybe I should look at replacing these before I even consider replacing the converters???

http://www.jadetree.com/bands/artist/cub_country
this wasn't done on a 002 but it was done with Pro Tools Free on a mac
i'm not sure what kind of mics where on the drums but they were set up
up on a mackie mixer and they recorded them as 2 tracks into PT:Free

then when they went to go master it at www.westwestsidemusic.com
alan was going to transfer there PT:Free sessions to his HD system
and they wouldn't let him, they made him run the song out of the laptop
into his outboard gear to master it,
