Default Kernal Panics

Alot of times I have trouble with PT crashing and causing Screen Freezes or Kernal Panics. Im forced to shut off the computer by pressing the power button. Im concerned about my Hard Drive and my External Drive. Are these PT crashes causing damage to my Drives?

And another thing. The trouble shooting steps never ever work. I found that the only thing that works is too keep trying until PT finally decides to be friendly. Anyone else gone thru or noticed this?

I had KERNEL panics all the time on 6.1.2 on Jaguar. If your getting these panics anyplace else, it may be a hardware issue. After a logic board replacement and switching to 10.3.4 and ProTools 6.4, thos problems have stopped. If your using external FW drives, they could cause it also.

I only get Kernal Panics when trying to open Pro Tools. Other than that my Mac works like a champ. Im just wondering if these Crashes/Screen Freezes/Kernal Panics that happen way too often is gonna mess up my computer. Because I have to keep shutting my computer down by force.

Which version of OSX? If its Jaguar, then make sure you have the very last version. I had a persistent KP problem on a (completely stock) iMac which was cured with an OSX update - despite all the advice about bad ram/hardware etc.
If it's Panther you want 10.3.4.
Also, try running without ext drive before replacing ram.

Mac OSX 10.2.8 ..PTLE 6.1.2 ..512 RAM.. The Kernal Panics happen even if the External HD is not connected. I really dont know how to check my RAM.. I got TechTool Deluxe, and it checked the ram.. It looks fine. The weird thing is that when PT starts working its works flawless for about 2-3 weeks, then when I go back to a session " Panic!"

You can also use the Apple hardware test cd to test the ram ( as mersisblue suggested). Have you thought about going to Panther? We found Jag to be generally more problematic.

And pull out each RAM stick one at a time (I'm assuming you have 256 x 2) and test each one seperately.

I did the Apple test, everything worked fine. Yesterday I started a new new session. Like I said PT decides to work when it wants, and it opened up fine. I Recorded 4 Stereo Audio Tracks, thats it. Today I opened it and after 2 minutes I got a screen freeze. I tried to open the session 3 more times. I got 3 screen freezes till I got another Kernal Panic. . I trashed preferences and repaired permissions. I need some serious help. Digi can you help me please?
