Default more xlr inputs through the 1/4" jacks

So I am using the ole 002 LE and I am aware the m audio and presonus line via lightpipe through adat can add 8 more mic pres, and 2 more channels through the spdif. But I cant seem to find any info on a mixer or something to add XLR pres to the 4 1/4" jack inputs on the back of the 002 that are almost worthless at times lol. Can someone tell me what they use or recommend?? Would be nice to get the full 18 channels for recording live etc. thanks a lot!
Jeff

Some of the same devices that you can use with the adat can also be used for the line ins. For example, on the Presonus Digimax, you can use the preamps in it and go directly from the line out to your 002's line inputs. In this case, you can set it up so that it's not using the digital conversion of the unit, but rather the preamps go directly to the individual 1/4 line outs of the unit. You would just use 4 of the 8 channels. Then you could hook up another Digimax to the adat port, using the Digimax's analog to digital conversion.

Some of the other similar units work the same way, though you should check with the manufacturer in each case to make sure.

A more expensive option would be to use 4 individual preamps, or two 2 channel preamps, or one 4 channel preamp, etc., such as the Focusrite ISA 428, or the Universal Audio 4-710d.

Done this with the ISA-428 and an API lunchbox(4 preamps). It even works with a lowly Mackie if you use the right cables(either from the input's insert jack, or from Mackie outputs). Haven't used SPDIF as I have never needed 18 inputs. Remember, if you do go with both digital inputs at the same time, you still need to have a single master clock source. Since the 002 has no wordclock input, this can get tricky(but yes, it can be done).

Right on I think I found something that will work great!! Gonna go with the individual preamps. Found an M-Audio DMP3 which is perfect and is affordable, with 2 channels! Thank you so much for you guys' help!!
