Default cross mojonization with OSX 10.5.6 and PT LE

So I recently just upgraded my imac (2 GHz Power PC G5...not Intel) operating system to OSX 10.5.6. I then tried opening my Pro Tools sessions in PT LE 7 and got a critical error. After reading these boards, I realize now that PT LE 7 will not work on OSX 10.5.6. I have also read that only PT LE 8.0 or 8.0.1 works with OSX 10.5.6 on a Power PC.

Question...where can I get 8.0 or 8.0.1? And is my assessment of what I need correct?

Oh, and I'm running the Digi002 Rack with 1.5 GB RAM.

I've said it before... and I'll say it again.... never ever upgrade without:

1) Backing up your whole system. Time Machine does a good job, but Disk Utility will do the trick as well.

2) Checking compatibility. There are plenty of resources on both these forums and the main Digi website, including a tree of compatible OSX and Windows versions.

Now, beyond that... the first version of PT officially compatible with any version of Leopard (10.5.x) was 7.4.2. This was a paid upgrade from previous versions, unless you had purchased 7.3.

8.0 was also a paid upgrade... so you might as well skip right to 8 if you are going to use 10.5.x. However, keep in mind that both PT and Apple have now dropped support for PPCs, so do NOT try to go farther than:

PT v.8.0.1 and OSX v.10.5.8.

It seems these will be the last officially compatible builds of either for PPC. Now, there are varying degrees of success with various builds of PT on PPC. Personally, I have an old G5 running 10.5.7 with 8.0cs3, and it does the job.... however... I have on more than one occasion considered downgrading it back to 10.4.11 and 7.4. Why? Performance. Granted, it is a first generation G5, with a pretty slow processor and a painfully underpowered video card. It has 6GB of RAM, but at this point... I really think the CPU and video are what is chocking it. I'm sure there are a few PPCs which handle 10.5 and 8 just fine, but 10.5 was introduced along with the Intel Macs, with multi-core processors and and significantly more horsepower.

If you think Leopard is effective for your system, then by all means use it. Just keep in mind that support will no longer continue for PPC, and don't expect any more updates from either Apple or Digidesign.

If you decide at any point to go back to 10.4.x... I would recommend at least using PT 7.4, as it provides some nice new features like Elastic Audio, which is definitely worth the paid upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks Dism! Yeah, I blew it by upgrading without reading up first. So is 8.0cs3 where I need to start? Meaning, I dont need some other version of 8.0 and then upgrade to 8.0cs3?

Bad luck brandonelam, we've all done that at least once without thinking clearly beore pressing the "accept update" button!!

I did want to stop in on this thread and say how much I like the new term you appear to be propogating though:
"cross mojonization"

I think it could catch on!
