Default Plug-In Insert Order

Does placing a plug-in(s) on any insert have an affect on the signal? I know the order of plugins does make a difference (e.g.) comp-eq or eq-comp. I see some engineers start their insert processing chain at insert b or c instead of a. Does this actually do something?

Nope a b c don't matter they are series but where u start don't matter

I usually go b first that way I can put something else first should the situation arise

yes - it's a convenience thing. Ever since having 10 inserts per channel I leave A open. It prevents from dragging pluggin's down just to insert something in front of them for example.

I used to typically insert the gain / phase plugin on A as well (although inout gain and phase control are these days handles by the channelstrip plugin more often then not)

Anyways - sound or signal are not affected by leaving inserts empty.
