recording while booted into true 64 bit mode on 10.6.2
if you hold down the keys '6' and '4' simultaneously while booting mac pro to boot into true 64 bit mode on mac os x snow leopard (10.6.2) , and then use pro tools to record audio; pops / clicks / audio glitches will get recorded INTO the audio track
just letting you know! system: mac pro dual xeon 64 bit 8-core, pro tools hd 8.0.3 cs1, mac os x snow leopard (10.6.2) |

Yep, PT still isn't 64 bit

Re: recording while booted into true 64 bit mode on 10.6.2
yeah but in snow leopard it should still function like a normal 32 bit application (like every other application running in snow leopard that isn't a mac os x system app)
but it doesn't function normally, hence my post |

Re: recording while booted into true 64 bit mode on 10.6.2
I've been running the 64 bit kernel the last two weeks to test things out a bit. I have had zero Pro Tools problems. No audio pops that you mentioned. The finder and some other apps are amazingly fast.
If you reboot to the 32bit kernel, does the problem instantly go away?

Re: recording while booted into true 64 bit mode on 10.6.2
Normal 32 bit software should run normally whether 32 or 64 bit kernel, but driver software (a.k.a. kernel extensions) is another thing. Run PT without drivers? Not possible. Therefore, PT will need to be explicitly built for 64 bit

The kexts are already 32/64-bit fat.

Might be, but until official announcement it's unsupported

I don't understand why you bother wasting your time booting your Tools into an unsupported mode. Hint : the key word is UNSUPPORTED. Do you like playing roulette with your work or something?

Re: recording while booted into true 64 bit mode on 10.6.2
Heh, the reason why Apple doesn't enable the 64-bit kernel by default is because it doesn't give the average user any advantage. When you're running the 32-bit kernel, everything else can still run in 64-bit (including the finder, etc), with full access to large amounts of memory and the extra capabilities of the processor. Your only limitation is that each driver and the kernel will not have individual access to chunks greater than 4GB of RAM...a capability which is only likely to be needed on servers (which is why the XServe boots in 64 bit kernel mode by default).
Bottom line is, that unless you're folding proteins or hosting a gigantic database, running with the 32-bit kernel doesn't hurt you at all. (Especially in Pro Tools, which can't use more than 4GB anyhow.) |
